Speccaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 31, 1911.
Application filed .Tune 7, 1910. Serial No. 565,503.
To all' whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosnrH NICGARRITY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improve' ments in Cigar-Cases, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to cigar cases of the class which are adapted to be carried in the pocket, and arranged to inclose a plurality of cigars, cigarettes, or the like.
The principal objects of this invention are to provide a cigar case that will carry a plurality of cigars, cigarettes or similar articles, and that may be flexed to conform to the curvature ofthe pocket of the user;
and to provide separate means to extract each cigar from said case by engaging the inner end of said cigar and withdrawing it from said case to such an extent as to be readily grasped, without chafing its cover or otherwise injuring said cigar.
The form of this invention hereinafter described provides a cigar case preferably formed of a plurality of cylindrical receptacles having removable caps, and hingedly connected in series, with their axes parallel; each receptacle being provided with a lift comprising a disk platform, forming a false bottom in said receptacle, arranged to support a cigar or cigarette, and having an operating rod projecting upwardly, and termi- Dating in the cap, above the periphery of said recepi'tacle; said rod being provided with a hooked end whereby it may be conveniently reciprocated in said casing, when said cap is removed; and a suitable undercut guide, arranged to slidably support said rod.
This invention includes the various novel features of construction and arrangement hereinafter more definitely specified.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a partial side elevation, and vertical longitudinal sectional view of a cigar case embodying a convenient form of this invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the structure shown in Fig. 1, the axes of its component members being disposed in a plane; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3 3 in Fig. 1 showing said members disposed in an arc; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the false bottom and its operating rod.
In said figures, the cigar case comprises a substantially flat :flexible structure formed of a series of cylindrical receptacles S, each of which are hingedly secured to the adjacent receptacle by the respective hinge plates 9 and 10, secured to the walls of said lreceptacles and pivotally connected by the pintles 12. Said receptacles each have a reduced portion 14, providing a neck at its open end, and forming a shoulder l5 adjacent to its periphery. Said shoulder 15 limits the extent of movement of the cap 16, which is arranged to lit the neck 14, to form a moisture proof closure.
Each receptacle is providedwith means to eject the cigar 20, comprising a substantially circular disk 21, forming a movable false bottom for the receptacle 8, and arranged to support said cigar. The false bottom 21 is provided with an operating rod 22, extending upwardly through said receptacles and terminating in a hooked end 24, or suitable knob for its convenient engagement with the finger of the operator. Said rod 22 is arranged to reciprocate in the receptacle, in the undercut guide 25, which maintains said rod parallel with the axis of said receptacle.
It may be observed with reference to Fig. 3, that by hingedly connecting the series of receptacles 8, a substantially fiat structure may be produced that may be liexed to conform to any desired curvature, so that when carried in the pocket, may conform to the curvature of the body of the user. Furthermore, as best shown in Fig. 1, when it is desired to extract the cigar 2O from the receptacle 8 shown at the right hand side of said figure, the cap 16 may be removed from its frictional engagement with the neck 14 of the receptacle 8, and the knob or handle 24 engaged t-o withdraw the rod 22, and its disk 21 outwardly, which withdraws the cigar 20 free from the receptacle 8, without necessitating its being pressed between the fingers, which tends to injure or break its fibers.
It is not desired to limit this invention to the precise details of construction and arrangement herein set forth, as it is obvious that various modifications may be made therein, without departing from the essential features of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim,-
1. A cigar case, comprising a plurality of cylindrical, inflexible receptacles hingedly connected together, false bottoms within
