SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 321,789, dated July 7, 1885.

To all whom, it may concern,.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. BosWoRTH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Shaytown, in the county of Eaton and State of Michigamhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Animaldiokes; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved animal-poke, showing the same applied to a horse in position for operation. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of my improved animal-poke. Fig. 3 is a side view of the same. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line x :u in Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a crosssection taken on the line y y in Fig. 3.

This invention relates to animal-pokes; and it has for its object to provide a device of this class which shall possess superior advantages in point of simplicity, durability, inexpensiveness, and general efficiency.

With these ends in view the invention conssts in the improved construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings hereto annexed, A designates the rod or bar which forms the body of my improved animal-poke, and which may be of any suitable dimensions, and preferably of a tapering shape, reduced in diameter toward the point or outer end, which is provided on the under side with a tapering block, B,which will prevent the point of the poke from running into the ground when the animal to which the poke is attached is feeding. Theinner end of the poke is provided on each side with a recess, C, from the end or shoulder D D of which. slots or kerfs E extend longitudinally through a portion of the body of the bar.

F is a metallic bail or strap secured to the inner end of the poke, with its legs G G extending over the recesses C O, and attached to the body of the poke above the shoulders D D. .The

legs G G are also connected directly below the shoulders D D by means of a screw-threaded rod or bolt, H, passing transversely through the body of the poke-bar and clinched or suitably secured to the legs of the bail.

I I designate a pair of longitudinally-slotted plates arranged to slide in the recesses C and slots E. The outer ends of the said plates are bent outward, so as to form brackets J, pro vided with slots K, fitting over the legs G of the bail F. The transverse bolt H passes through the longitudinal slots L iu the plates I, which latter may be retained securely in any position to which they may be adjusted by means of nuts N N, arranged upon the boltH between the legs G G and the `plates I I, and capable of Vbeing tightened up against the latter.

O O are a pair of short chains, the inner links of which are arranged to slide upon the legs G of the bail F below the brackets J of the plates I. To the outer ends of said chains are attached a pair of straps, l l?, the ends of which are provided with buckles Q. A ring or link, R, is suitably attached to the bar or body A of the poke near the outer end of the same.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood. The straps P l? are buckled around the fore legs of the animal above the knees, and the slides I I may be adjusted so as to limit the sliding movement of the chains O O, thereby restricting the step of the animal to any desired extent. The ring R is attached to the halter-strap. When thus applied, the poke will prevent the animal from jumping fences, and will restrain its movements to any desired extent. The block B at the outer end of the poke-bar will prevent it from running into the ground when the animal is feeding. I

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desireto secure by Letters Patent of the United States-- I. In an animal-poke, the combination of the poke-bar, longitudinally-sliding chains attached to the inner end of the same, and provided with straps for attachment to the legs of the animal, and means for regulating and IOO restricting the sliding movement of the said chains, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.

2. In an animal-poke, the combination of the poke-bar having a beveled block secured to the under side of its outer end, longitudinally-sliding chains attached to the inner end of said poke-bar, and provided with means for attachment to thelegs of the animal, and means for regulating and restricting the sliding motion of the said chains, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

In an animal-poke, the combination of the poko-bar, longitudinally-sliding chains at the inner end of the same, having means forattaehment to the legs of the animal, means for regulating and restrieti ng the sliding movement of said chains, and a ring near the outer end of the poke-bar for the attachment of the halter-strap, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4. The combination of the poke-bar having recesses at its inner end and slots extendingr into the body ofthe bar from the said recesses, the metallic bail or strap secured over the said recesses, the slotted longitudinally-sliding plates having slotted brackets encircling the legs of the bail, the transverse screw-threaded rod or bolt passing through the body of the bar secured to the legs of the bail, and havingnuts between said legs and sliding plates7 and the chains sliding upon the legs of the bail provided with straps for the attachment to the legs of the animal, all arranged and operating as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
