GUSTAV A. SOHURMANN, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
BACKlNG FOR BOOKS.
EBPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 321,142, dated June 30, 1885.
Application filed December 6, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,GUsTAv A. SOHljRMANN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Backing for Books, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide for the binding of scrap-books, invoice-books, or books of any style in a substantial and firm manner, and in such a way that the leaves or body can be removed from the covers and backing for filing away, and the backing again used for a new book. I
To these ends my invention consists in a backing of wood or other suitable material provided with removable attaching-strips for holding the leaves of the book, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view showing a book of my improved construction. Fig. 2 is a section through one end of the backing. Fig. 3 shows one of the sections of the leaves.
The backing Act the book is made of wood or other suitable material and of the proper size and form, and to its inner face are attached the dovetailed cross-strips B, that are held to the backing by means of screws, so as to allow of their convenient removal, and these strips may be in one piece with the backing. The leaves or sections 0 are grooved at their back edges, so as to fit upon the crossstrips B, and be thereby held firmly to the backing. In the case of a scrap-book the usual interposed filling-strips are sufficient to give a substantial hold; but in the case of inbook from coming off from the cross-pieces, 5
strips F are attached lengthwise of the backing and against both ends of the cross-strips B. The backing being prepared in this manner with the covers, in order to complete the book it is only necessary to remove one of the strips F, slip the leaves over thecross-strips B, and then replace the strip F. After the book has been used to the extent desired the leaves can be removed and the covers and backing again filled, as before. In this manner I obtain a firm and substantial book, and save the usual expense of binding.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The backing A for books, provided with the dovetailed cross-strips B and retainingstrips F, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the backing-piece 1Lx provided with the dovetailed cross-strips nation with the fixed dovetailed cross-strips B, arranged to engage with the grooves in the leaves, and the rigid backing A,carrying said strips, substantially as described.
GUSTAV A. SGHllRMANN.
