w 2 Claims. (Cl. 248153) The present invention is concerned with a stand for containers and is more particularly directed to a ground supported stand for various types of containers such as garbage or trash cans and the like.

The principal object of the invention is to provide a stand including a basket for detachably receiving con tainers and which stand can be quickly and easily extended into the ground for supporting the basket thereof upright and above the ground whereby containers for trash, garbage and the like can be retained upright and can not be readily upset by persons or animals for keeping the surrounding area free and clear of the contents of the containers while at the same time having the entire device create an attractive appearance.

A further important object of the invention is to provide a stand for supporting cylindrical containers having lids and which stand provides a support for such lids when detached from their container and is of a rugged construction whereby the same can be used for a considerable length of time and will protect the containers therein and yet the stand can be readily disassembled into a compact package for shipping purposes or assembled for use without requiring special tools or knowledge.

Further objects of the invention will be in part obvious and in part pointed out in the following detailed description of the accompanying drawings, in which;

FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the present stand as mounted on the ground.

FIG. 2 is a top view of the present stand.

FIG. 3 is a cross-sectional view of the stand taken on line 3-3 of FIG. 2 and showing a can and lid as mounted thereon in use.

FIG. 4 is an enlarged partially exploded cross-sectional view showing the connection of the rod and base plate of the stand.

FIG. 5 is a cross-sectional view of a modified form of the present stand.

And FIG. 6 is a bottom view of the stand of FIG. 5.

Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings wherein like and corresponding parts are indicated by similar reference characters, numeral 1 indicates a straight rod having a pointed end 2 and a threaded end 3. Said threaded end 3 has a longitudinal peripheral slot 4.

A disc 5 has a threaded center opening 6 with a longi tudinal slot 7. Rod end 3 is screwed into opening 6 of disc 5 to be in threaded engagement therewith until slots 4 and 7 are in register whereupon a key rivet 8 is dropped into said registering slots to prevent the unscrewing of rod 1 relative to disc 5.

The basket of the stand includes a plurality of similar rods each of which has a base end portion 9 whose end 10 is welded to disc 5 and all of said base end portions 9 extends radially from said disc 5 while being equally spaced apart therearound. Each base end portion 9 has a bent end 11 from which extends leg 12 whose upper end 13 curves inwardly over its base end portion 9. A ring of a diameter'suitable for receiving a container B therethrough has the ends 14 of legs 12 welded thereto so that said ring 15 is spaced above, but concentric with disc 5.

A second disc 16 has a center opening 17 and said second disc is positioned on and welded to the ends 10 3,279,733 Patented Oct. 18, 1966 ice of said base end portions 9 and is thus spaced above and concentric with disc 5.

A lid retainer consists of leg 18 spot welded to one ,of the legs 12 and has an arm 19 normal thereto with the link 20 extending laterally thereof. An intermediate straight portion 21 extends between link 20 and a second link 22 which second link extends laterally of an arm 23 which extends normal to a leg 24 welded to a second leg 12 so that intermediate portion 21 is spaced from and extends laterally of a pair of said legs 12 a distance sufli-cient for receiving a lid C therebetween until the handle D of said lid rests on intermediate portion 21.

FIG. 5 and 6 shows a modified form of the present stand which is the same as that previously described but including in addition a tube 25 with rod 1 extending therein and a plurality of arms 26 welded at one end to tube 25 and extending radially thereof to the corners 11 of each base 9 and welded thereto for increasing the support of said bases 9.

In the use of both forms of stand rod 1 has its pointed end driven into the ground A until disc 5 is positioned a short distance above said ground. Thereupon container B such as a trash can, garbage can, or the like can be inserted through ring 15 and seated upon disc 16. Such cans generally have an annular side wall extending below their bottom which would rest upon base end portions 9. Lid C would be mounted upon said support as shown in FIG. 3 when placing material in the can or slid therefrom and placed upon the top of the can B for closing the same in the conventional manner.

The legs 12 are positioned outside of ring 15 in such a manner that when a container such as a large garbage can is set in the basket said legs will not touch the container. The stand thus will support the containers so that they can not be readily upset by animals such as dogs or turned over by children at play or other people or objects striking the side of the basket and thus will pre vent the contents of the container from littering the surrounding ground.

The tube 25 and arm 26 are modifications shown in FIGS. 5 and 6 to provide a strengthening arrangement for the basket that will tend to prevent the bending of the bases 9 with reference to disc 5.

'It is to be appreciated that the stand can be packed for shipping with the post 1 separate from disc 5 and said post can be readily assembled to the disc 5 with the key rivet 8 by unskilled persons and without requiring tools so that the stand can be packed in a relative small box for storage or for the shipping thereof.

The present invention is capable of considerable modification and such changes thereto as come within the scope of the appended claims is deemed to be a part of the present invention.

I claim:

1. A stand for containers comprising a pair of annular plates positioned spaced apart one above the other, at least one of said plates having a central threaded opening with a key slot, a rod having a pointed end and a threaded opposite end in threaded engagement with said plate central threaded opening, said rod threaded end having a key slot positioned for matching with said plate central opening key slot, a key positioned in said plate central opening key slot and said rod key slot for preventing the relative rotation of said rod and said plate with central opening, a plurality of L-shaped arms, each having a base end portion and an upright leg extending at an angle to one another, said arms being fixedly connected at their base end portions to and between said pair of plates with the upright legs thereof extending in an opposite direction to said rod and the base end portions of said arms extending radially of said pair of plates in a spaced apart series therearound, and a ring fixedly connected to the upright leg ends of said arms and being of a size for receiving a container therethrough to be seated on one of said pair of plates.

2. A stand for containers as claimed in claim 1 wherein a rectangular rod is fixedly connected to some of said arm upright legs and extends laterally thereof for supporting a container lid when detached therefrom.

Claims

1. A STAND FOR CONTAINERS COMPRISING A PAIR OF ANNULAR PLATES POSITIONED SPACED APART ONE ABOVE THE OTHER, AT LEAST ONE OF SAID PLATES HAVING A CENTRAL THREADED OPENING WITH A KEY SLOT, A ROD HAVING A POINTED END AND A THREADED OPPOSITE END IN THREADED ENGAGEMENT WITH SAID PLATE CENTRAL THREADED OPENING, SAID ROD THREADED END HAVING A KEY SLOT POSITIONED FOR MATCHING WITH SAID PLATE CENTRAL OPENING KEY SLOT, A KEY POSITIONED IN SAID PLATE CENTRAL OPENING KEY SLOT AND SAID ROD KEY SLOT FOR PREVENTING THE RELATIVE ROTATION OF SAID ROD AND SAID PLATE WITH CENTRAL OPENING, A PLURALITY OF L-SHAPED ARMS, EACH HAVING A BASE END PORTION AND AN UPRIGHT LEG EXTENDING AT AN ANGLE TO ONE ANOTHER, SAID ARMS BEING FIXEDLY CONNECTED AT THEIR BASE END PORTIONS TO AND BETWEEN SAID
