Description

(Modelj) R. GHISELIN.
A BLIND HINGE.
No. 326,729. Patented Sept. 22, 1885.
N PETERS. Pnmeumugnphnr, wnhi uuuuuu c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
RICHARD GHISELIN, OF VEBS'IER GROVES, MISSOURI.
BLIND-HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 326,729, dated September 22, 1885.
Application filed February 2G, 1884.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD GHIsELiN, of Webster Groves, St. Louis county, Missouri, have made a new and useful Improvement in Blind-Hinges, of which the following is a l full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a view in perspective of the improved hinge, and Fig. 2 a top view, the blind and window frame being in section.
The same letters ofreferen ce denote the saine parts.
The present invention is an improvement more especially in self-locking blind-hinges. The leaves of such hinges are apt to break at a point between the knuckle and the outer broader end of the leaf. To obviate this difficulty I provide a shoulder, against which the side of the blind can abut, and to furnish additional means for connecting the hinge With the blind and window frame is the aim of this improvement, which consists in providing the narrow inner end of the leaf with a rib which projects at right angles from such narrow inner end and extends from the region ofthe knuckle toward the outer end of the leaf and to meet (when the hinge is attached in position) the side of the blind in the case of one of the leaves ofthe hinge, and the side of the window-frame in ease of the other of the hinge-leaves. The rib is also constructed'so that a screw, nail, or other equivalent fastening may pass through the rib into the blind or window frame, as the case may be, and thereby fasten the hinge at those points to the blind and window frame, respectively, in addition to the usual fastenings hitherto used in attaching the hinge.
A, Fig. l, represents a hinge of the class under consideration, and one exhibiting the improvement.
B B represent the leaves of the hinge.
C represents the knuckle, and D D represent the outer ends of the leaves, respectively.
Aside from the improvement the hinge is of the usual description.
E represents the rib with which the leaf of the hinge is provided. It projects from the (Model.)
narrow part F of the leaf, and it extends from the region of the knuckle toward the outer end of the leaf to meet the blind I-I or window-frame G, as the case may be, and as shown in Fig. 2. When it is thus extended it, as is seen, serves as a shoulder to support the blind sidewise in case of one of the leaves and to support the-other leafagainst the window-frame. The hinge is attached in the usual manner, by means of fastenings passing through the ordinary perforations d d, and the rib has an eye, e, through Which an additional fastening (not shown, but indicated in dotted lines) can pass, and thence into the blind or window frame.
As shown in the drawings, the leaves B B can be interchangeably applied to the blind or window frame; but in some cases, and to snit a special construction of window-frame, the rib upon the leaf which is attached to the window-frame may be modified.
lt will be observed that by placing the perpendicular face of the edge a4 of the inclined braces E E at right angles to the face of the plate D, the horizontal faces c of the braces E E will also be at right angles to the face of the sides ofthe plate D, thus forming a very strong brace.
I am aware that a hinge has been made having two fiat outer ends which are adapted to be secured to the window-frame or blindframe at or through their sides, and I there fore disclaim such construction; but as I design to secure my hinge to the blind or window frame at and through the rib E, and as I believe this to bc new and novel, as it is of great importance, I do claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved hinge for shutters, the leaves B and B', provided with the outer perforated ends, D D, and also provided with the inclined ribs E E, having perforations e, the horizontal faces a3 of which extend at right angles to the portions D D and form braces and re-enforcements therefor, in combination with the pintle C, substantially as set forth.
B. GHISELIN.
