GEORGE V. HODGIN, OF CANON CITY, COLORADO.
ADJUSTABLE HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 1915.
Application filed July 15, 1914. Serial No. 851,129.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE V. HODGIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canon City, in the county of Fremont and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Hinge, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to gate and door hinges, and aims to provide hinges of such construction, as to enable the door or gate to which they are applied, to be adjusted, when desired, to overcome the sagging of the gate or door.
It is also within the scope of the present invention, to provide gate or door hinges of simple and inexpensive construction, which will be convenient in their application to various doors or gates, which will readily permit the door or gate to be adjusted to overcome the sag thereof, and which will be practical, serviceable and efficient in their use.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention has been illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is an elevation of a door or gate having the improved hinges applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a top view, on an enlarged scale, of one of the hinges in use, portions being shown in section.
In the drawing, the numeral 1 designates an arbitrary gate or door, and the numeral 2 designates the post, jamb or other upright to which it is hinged, it being understood that the present hinges may be employed in connection with various doors and gates.
Each of the upper and lower hinges is formed from a metallic strap 3, which is doubled or bent upon itself to provide the main or inner leaf 4, and the outer or auxiliary leaf 5, the bend or portion intermediate the two leaves being formed into a loop or eye 6 turned outwardly. The loops or eyes 6 of the hinges are arranged to en gage over the upstanding pintles 7 of the hangers or carriers 8 secured to the post or upright 2, to pivotally connect the hinges with the post or upright.
The inner or main leaf 4 of each hinge is provided with a longitudinal series of longitudinal slots 9, the outer or supplemental leaf of each hinge extending over one or more of the slots 9. As illustrated, the outer leaves or refiexed portions 5 extend over two of the slots 9 of the respective leaves 4, the leaves 5 being provided with longitudinal slots 10 registering with the corresponding slots 9 of the leaves 4.
The bolts 11 are passed through suitable apertures or openings provided in the door or gate 1, and are received by the slots 9 and 10 of the hinges, nuts 12 being threaded on those ends of the bolts remote from the hinges, or at that side of the door or gate opposite the hinges. Washers 13 are mounted upon the outer ends of the bolts between the heads of the bolts and the hinge leaves. The outer sides of the leaves 5 are provided with transverse corrugations 1% along the slots 10, while the back or rear sides of the washers 13 adjacent the slots 10, are provided with transverse corrugations 15, interengageable with the corrugations or teeth 14 of the hinge leaves 5. The corrugations may be employed with each of the slots and washers, if desired, similar to the corrugations 14 and 15 as illustrated and described.
In assembling the hinges with the door or gate, the bolts 11 of the upper hinge are preferably disposed at those ends of the slots 9 and 10 remote from the post or upright 2, while the bolts of the lower hinge are disposed at those ends of the slots 9 and 10 nearest the post or upright 2, whereby the upper end of the door or gate may be adjusted toward the upper end of the post or upright 2, while the lower end of the door or gate may be adjusted away from the lower end of the post or upright, to overcome the sagging of the door or gate, when it occurs, due to the warping of the wood, or other causes.
Ordinarily, when the bolts 11 are tightened, the washers 13 being clamped tightly against the leaves of the hinges, will rigidly support the gate or door from the hinges, the loops or eyes being journaled upon the pintles 7 of the hangers or brackets 8, enabling the door or gate to swing open and closed in the usual manner. Should the justed readily, by loosening the bolts 11,
in order that When the door or gate is shifted to normal or true position, the bolts may adjust themselves along the slots 9 and 10 of the hinge leaves. Then, When the bolts are again tightened, the door or gate Will be locked at its new position, it being observed that the interengaging corrugations 14: and 15 of the respective hinge leaves and Washers, serve to effectively prevent the accidental sagging of the gate, due to its momentum or Weight.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is r In a device of the character described, a
hinge comprising a doubled strap forming overlapping leaves having an eye therebetween, the leaves having registering longitudinal slots, one leaf having transverse corrugations adjoining the slot therein, a bolt Working Within the slots of the leaves, and a Washer mounted upon the bolt and having corrugations interengageable with the aforesaid corrugations. V
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have heretoaflixed my'signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses. v
