SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,675, dated February 3, 1885.
Application filed November 18, 1884. (N model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
' Be it known that I, JAMES W. POFF, of Harrisburg, in the county of Poinsettand State of Arkansas, have invented a new and Improved SawingMachine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, efficient, and durable one-man crosscut-sawing machine which may be worked by utilizing the weight of the op erator, and with an easy natural swing of the body, causing little fatigue.
The invention consists of the combinations of parts and their construction, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
Reference is to behad to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and which is a perspective view of my improved sawingmachine as in use.
The letters A B indicate, respectively, the top and legs ofa strong bench-like frame adapted to supportthe workingparts ofthe machine. The top A has a central opening, a, and has fixed to its forward end the vertical strut or L post 0, which prei'erablyis forked at its lower end, where it connects pivotally at c with the forward ends of two parallel bars, d d, which, with their rear connecting foot piece or plate, D, form the treadle D of the machine.
Within the opening a of the top A, I pivot on a strong pin, 0, the crosshead E, which connects rigidly with a pendent lever, F, which in turn connects pivotally at g with the headpiece G, to which the saw H is rigidly connected at 71 7 On the rear end of the cross-head E is formed a hook, I, to receive the upper end or cross bar of a (g-shaped stirrup or link, J, the lower ends,jj, of which are bent to enter loosely the bars (I (Z of the treadle D, and the forward end of the cross-head E connects pivotally at k with the lower forked end of a link, K. the upper end of which is pivoted at Z in the forked end of the hand-lever L, which is pivoted at m to the upper end of the'post O. The handlever has a suitable cross-bar, M, at the rear end, by which it may be grasped and worked conveniently.
The operation is as follows: The log, 0, to be sawed or cross'cut is rolled to the front of the machine, or the machine is placed behind the log, as shown, which may easily be done, and
so that the saw H crosses the top of the log at the desired place. The operator now stands on the treadle-plate D and grasps the handle M of the lever L, and by hearing his weight mainly on the plate D the saw 1-1 will be carried forward into the log, and by next hearing his weight mainly on the handle M of lever L the saw will be carried back again, and these movements may alternately and rapidly be continued to give successive forward and back strokes to the saw until the log is cut through. The link J connects to the treadle D back of the center of the treadle, and the link connects with the cross-head E much nearer its pivot 6 than does the link K, pivoted to the handle, so that the downward bodily movement of the operator with the treadle-plate D is not very great to give a long and rapid forward stroke to the saw, while the handle it of the lever L has considerable range of movement, whereby the operator may work the machine steadily with an easy swing of the body.
With my improved machine one man can do quite double the work he can do by driving a saw by hand-power alone.
1 propose to make all parts of the machine except the bench of suitable cast or wrought metal, so it shall be cheap and durable.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the fixed upright equidistantl y secured to the supporting-frame, of the pendent lever having a fixed cross-head, with one arm connected by links to a treadle, one end of said treadle being connected to the lower end of said fixed upright, and the handlever, pivoted at one end to the-upper end of 0' the said upright, and connected intermediately of its pivoted and free ends by a link to the other arm of said cross-head, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
