Description

(No Model.) I
J. A. OWENS.
DRAG SAW.
No. 320,086. Patented June 16', 1885 Unrrnn mares JOHN ANTHONY OWVENS, OF MCDONALD, GEORGIA.
DRAGTSAW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,086, dated June 16, 1885.
Application filed April 15, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, .I. A. OWENS, of Mc- Donald, in the county of Thomas and State of Georgia, have invented an Improved Sawing- Machine,of which the following is a specification.
The special object of the invention is to construct a hand sawing-machine by which one person can readily crosscut logs and timber with as much or more facility than two persons ordinarily do it.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claim.
1 Figure 1 of the drawings is a side elevation,
and Fig. 2 a plan view.
In the drawings, A represents a frame consisting of the cross-bar or base a, the two parallel uprights a a, connected at or near the top, the longitudinal beam a, the upright a, and, if desired, the braces a a B B are bearings placed in the angles formed between the uprights a a and the parts a. In these bearings is arranged the vibratory shaft O,carrying the balance-wheel D between the uprights a a and the outer crank-arm, d, having the crank-pin d. On this pin is pivoted a pitman, E.
F is a swinging arm pivoted at the top to the upright a and to the lower end of this arm are pivoted the front end of the pitman E and the rear end of the saw G. The saw passes in front through a slotted guide, 9, while the swinging arm F vibrates in a guide-slot, f.
To the side of pitman E, at a point intermediate between its ends,is pivoted a vertical rod, H, which is also pivoted to the front end of a lever, K, which is fulcrumed upon aside pivot of one of the uprights a, and is pro- 0 vided with a series, k, of fulcrum-holes, so as to allow the leverage to be changed.
In the front end of the longitudinal beam a is a downwardly-extending dog, J, which is made fast in the log or timber that is to be crosscut.
The operation is as follows: The operator simply works the lever up and down like the handle of a pump. This gives a reciprocating motion to the pitman E,whose ends, being pivoted to the swinging arms (I F, travel in the curve or are of a circle. Thus it will be seen that a combined rotary and reciprocatory motion of the pitman operates the saw, while the latter feeds automatically by its own gravity.
By my invention practical experiment proves that I can crosscut timber with onehalf the usual labor,do it equally as well, and with much less wear and tear upon human muscle.
Having thus described all that is necessary to a full understanding of my invention, what I claim as new,and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
In drag-saws, the combination, with the frame A, of the shaft 0, arranged in bearings B, carrying the balance-wheel D, and having crank-arm (Z, the pitman E, pivoted to the crank-pin d,the arm F,swinging in guide-slot and pivoted at bottom to the front end of arm E, the saw G, working in slotted guide g and pivoted to the lower end of swinging arm F, the vertical pivoted rod H, connecting with the pitman E, and the hand-lever K, connecting with the upper end of rod H,whereby the 75 saw may be operated, as described.
