JAMES R. SLAUSON AND WILLIS D. SLAUSON, OF RAGINE, WISCONSIN.
BALlNG-PRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 315,850, dated April 14, 1885.
Application filed December 10, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JAMES R. SLAUSON and WILLIs D. SLAUSON, of Racine, in the county of Racine and State of WVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bailing-Presses; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Our invention relates to hay and cotton presses, and is designed as an improvement in a device for which the United States Letters Patent No. 287,734 have been granted to IV. D. Slauson, October 30, 1883; and it consists in peculiarities of construction,as will be fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claim.
"In the drawings, Figure 1 is a broken View in side elevation of the central portion of a press embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line to .t of Fig; 1, and Fig. 3 is a verticallongitudinal section through the same.
The object of our invention is to provide a device that will be adapted to act as a stop to retain the material in the position into which the press-plunger has pushed it in the loadingchamber of the press. This is accomplished by means of grooves cut in the inner faces of the press-box, and of plates fastened in the said faces, so that their corrugated or toothed edges cover a portion of the grooves. These corrugated edges are directed toward the material being pressed, and the rear edges of the grooves are out so as to allow the pressed material to lodge in the same'and come in contact with the plates at each return-stroke of the plunger.
A indicates the base of the press. B is the packing-chamber, and O is the baling-chamber.
D represents the hinged beater, which is pivoted at b, and is suitably connected to the driving mechanism (not shown) through the lever D, by means of which it is adapted to swing upward,as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 3.
Close to the entrance of the baling-chamber O the groove 0 is cut into each of the inner faces of its sides. The outer edges of these grooves are out at right angles to the sides, but the inner or opposite edges are beveled or rounded out, as shown at c.
O O are the retaining-plates, which we fasten into the countersunk faces of the press-box so as to bring their corrugated or toothed edges 0' 0 adjacent to the square edges of the grooves c.
The operation of our device is as follows: When the plunger B is withdrawn, the hinged beater is raised and the material to be pressed is inserted. The heater is then permitted to fall heavily upon the material and the plunger is forced in, driving the material before it into the baling-cbamber, to be retained therein after the plunger is withdrawn by the plates 0, since the elasticity of the material will cause it to expand out into the grooves c.
Having thus described our invention, What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a hay or cotton press, a baling-chambcr having grooves out in the inner faces of its sides, in combination with retaining-plates having saw teeth therein, substantially as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands, at Racine, in the county of Racine and State of \Visconsin, in
' the presence of two witnesses.
