SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 758,492, dated n ri: 26, 1904.

ville, in the county of Troup and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baling-Presses; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and tothe letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in baling-presses; and the object of the invention is to produce an apparatus which may be operated by hand-power and expeditiously, whereby bales of material may be easily and quickly made, and in the provision of a peculiar construction of balebox having hinged sides and top and means 011 holding the parts into position to form a The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and in combinations and arrangements of parts,which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my balingpress. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail view in perspective, showing the top and sides of the baling-press partially opened; and Fig. 5 is a detail view of one of the clamping baling members.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the frame of my press, which may be of any suitable construction and material and provided with a plunger B, provided with a shank portion B, having a reciprocating movement and mounted in a recessed portion of the cross-bar A upon the baling-frame. A rack-bar O is secured to the upper face of the shank portion of the plunger, and a pinion-wheel D, fixed to rotate with the shaft E, is designed to mesh with the teeth of the rack-bar and to impart a reciprocating movement thereto as the pintop plan view of the drawings.

The portion of the press where the bale is formed comprises the bottom K, which is continuous with the bottom portion in which the material is being fed. and the two hinged sides N N, which are hinged at their lower ends to the longitudinal beams M, and the upper throw of said doors is limited by the inner faces of said doors coming in contact with the strip J, which is fixed to the end of the bailing-compartment and which is provided with grooves for the reception of balingwires. Strips N are fastened to the outer faces of the doors and have their free ends projecting beyond the swinging edges of the doors. A door G is hinged to a cross-piece G, forming a top to the baling-compartment, and is provided with a suitable handle G whereby said door G may be raised. The door when closed is adapted to contact with the upper edges of the doors N when in closed relation and also to contact with the upper edge of the grooved block J. When the door G is closed, the upper ends of the strips N will be flush with the outer face of said door G. Mounted upon the ends of the cross-bars G, G, and G are the parallel beams T, between which and the outer faces of the pressbox intervene spaces, as shown clearly in the These beams T are positioned also a slight distance above the upper face of the door G when closed and aiford means for engagement of clamping members, which will be presently described.
The clamping members comprise two pieces Q and Q, one of which has an elongated slot Q adapted to receive the contracted shank portion of the other piece, and q designates a pivotal pin carried by the arms on the piece Q and on which the contracted shank portion of the part Q is pivoted. A button S is pivment by the free end of the button being swung over the inner pivotal end of the piece Q, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Each piece Q and Q has a shouldered portion q upon its under face adapted to engage over the upper ends of the strips N when in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings to securely hold the doors N closed; When thus adjusted, it will be observed that the top of the balingpress will be held securely closed, while a lever L, pivoted to the press-box, is adapted to be thrown underneath the handle of the cover G for the purpose of further holding the same in a locked relation.
After the bale has been formed the lever L may be thrown to one side, so that its end will disengage the handle upon the door G, and the buttons S are thrown so that their free ends will disengage the inner ends of the pieces Q, after which the clamping members may be removed by means of their being turned upon their pivots, after which the top door may be raised and the side doors swung down. The bale which has been formed having been removed, the sides and top may be thrown together and locked securely in readiness for the admission of another bale.
WVhile I have shown a particular construction of apparatus embodying my invention,
it will be understood that I may make alterations, if desired, in the details of construction of the same without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A baling-press comprising a box, a plunger with rack-and-pinion means for driving the same, the sides of the box being hinged at their lower ends and beams mounted upon cross-pieces of the press-frame, spaces intervening between the same and the opposite sides of the press-box, ahinged door adapted to swing down upon the free swinging edges of the side doors, clamping members comprising two pieces pivoted together and having shouldered portions designed to engage over the ends of said strips, and a button carried by one of said strips and adapted to lock the pieces of the clamping members in alinement, said ends of the clamping members adapted to engage under the beams, as set forth.
