- FENCE WIEE WINDING DEVICE.'
Patentd Apr. 14, 1885.
Nrran Smarts Farrar @einem VILLIAM LGGAN, OF PRAIRIE DU SAC, \VISCONSIN.
FENCE-WIRE-WINDING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,03, dated. April le, 1885.
Application filed September 15, 1884. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM LOGIN, ofV
Prairie du Sac, in the county of Sauk and State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Vre-Vinding Devices; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, 'and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specication, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved fence-wire-winding device, showing the same complete and in position for operation. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view of thesaine. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view, and Fig. is a detail view.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
rIhis invention relates to devices for rewinding fence-wires, and especially barbed wires, when it is desired to move a fence from one place to another, and it has for its object to provide a device of this class which shall possess superior advantages in point of simplicity, durability, and general efficiency.
Vith these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A designates the base-frame of my improved device, which consists of a pair of transverse parallel beams or bars, B B, the ends `oi" which are provided with slots C C, formed in the direction of the length of the said bars.
D D are a pair of curved or arched brackets, the front and rear ends of which are provided with feet E, having` vertical perforations F, to receive the screws G, inserted from the under side through the slots G and perforat-ionsF, and provided with thumb-nuts H, for
the purpose of holding thebraekets D D in position. The upper sides of the said brackets are provided with inclined slots I I, forming bearings for a transverse shaft, J, provided at one end with a crank, K, by means of which it may be conveniently manipulated. Said shaft is provided with a conical sleeve, L, ad-
j ustable by means of a set-screw, L', and with a collar, N, likewise adjustable by means of a set-screw, O, and provided on diametricallyopposite sides with radially-extending arms P P, the outer ends ot' which have laterallyextending fingers Q.
In the operation of this device it is the intention to utilize old spools or reels from which the wire has been taken, and as these differ very much in length provision has been made, as described, for the lateral adjustment of the brackets in which the shaft has its bearings, as well as for the adjustment of the sleeves or collars, by means of which the reel is secured.
In operation the reel is adjusted upon the shaft by removing the latter from its bearings, detaching the collar N, slipping the reel upon the shaft, and securing it by replacing the collar N. The reel will be centered upon the shaft by means of the conical sleeve L and a conical projection, It, upon the collar N ,which enter the eyes of the reel, as shown clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The fingersQ will engage the cross ends or heads of the reel, thus causing the latter to turn with the shaft when the latter is revolved.
The device is placed upon a wheelbarrow or handcart and clamped to the same at the ends next the handles in order to prevent it from tipping when the shaft is manipulated. The Wire having been attached to the reel, the shaft may be revolved with one hand, while the cart is manipulated with the other, thus winding the wire upon the reel or spool.
The construction of this device is exceedingly simple, and itis efficient and easily operated.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesl. In a device for winding fence-wire, the combination of the transverse longitudinallyslotted sills, the arched brackets adjustable upon the said sills by screws and thumb-nuts, the removable shaft having an adj ustable conical sleeve, and a collar provided with arms having laterally-extending fingers, and a reel or spool adjustable upon the said shaft, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a device for winding fence-wire, the combination, with suitable supporting-brackets laterally adjustable upon transverse sills, of a shaft journaled removably in the said ICO my own I have hereunto aXed my signature brackets, a conical sleeve adjustable upon the l in presence of two Witnesses. y
said shaft, and an adjustable collar having an inwardly-extending conical projection and provided with radial arms having inwardlyu WILLIAM LOGAN Witnesses:
