XAVIEB ST. PIERRE, OF OSOEOLA, NEVADA.
SKATE-SHARPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 300,656, dated June 17,1884.
(No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, XAVIERST. PIERRE, of Osceola, in the county of WVhite Pine and State of Nevada, have invented a new and Improved Skate-Sharpener, of which thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to furnish a convenient device for sharpening skate-runners with a file, and one with which no diificulty will be experienced in forming a uniform gutter in the skate-runner.
The invention consists of the combination of parts and their construction, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed outin the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my new skate-sharpener. Figs. 2 and 3 show in elevation the ends thereof. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the file removed from the holder, and Fig 5 is a longitudinal section of my invention.
A represents the file-holder, and B represents the file. The holder A is by preference made of sheet metal struck up in such manner as to form the side or check pieces, a a, for guiding the device upon the skate-runner, and so as to form also the narrow lip b at one end, and the wider lip or end piece, b,and lips 0 cat the 0th er,which lips c c overlap the end piece, I), for bracing and strengthening it, as will be understood from Fig. Thelip or end piece, I), has the aperture (1 made through it to receive the stud d, formed upon one end of the file B. The file B is formed with fiat or round-' ed sides or edges, preferably four in number, and these sides or edges are cut with file-teeth of different grades of fineness, so that by reversing the file in the holder A the different sides of the file may be used on. the edge of the skate-runner, as circumstances require. The edges of the side pieces or'cheeks, a a, are outwardly-flared, as shown at a a, to facilitate the application of" the device to and use of it upon the skate-runner.
In use the file B will be placed in the holder A by first passing the stud cl through the aperture d of the end plate or lip, b, and then pressing the opposite end of the file doWninto the holder, the narrow lip b and end plate, 1), serving to hold the file against endwise movement in the holder; This done, the device will be pressed down'upon the skate-runner to be sharpened, so that the file B comes fairly in the gutter thereof, and then the device will be moved rapidly backward and forward upon the runner, which will cause the file to sharpen the runner, and the side plates, to a, will guide the device upon the runner, so that the runner will be uniformly sharpened, and no difficulty will be experienced in keeping the device in place upon the runner.
Instead of using sheet metal for forming the holder A, the holder may be made of a steel plate or of malleable cast-iron.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The skate -sharpening file B, having a stud, d, and flat or rounded sides or edges, in combination with the holder A, having end pieces, b b,one being apertured, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The file B, formed with the stud cl, in combination with the holder A,having cheek pieces a and lip I), and end piece, I), having aperture (1, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The holder A, having guiding or cheek pieces a,lip I), end plate, bf, and re-enforeing lapping lips c c, in combination with the file B, having fiat or rounded edges or sides, and formed with the stud d at one end, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. In a skatesharpcningdevice, the holder A, struck up of sheet metal, with the cheekpieces a a, the end pieces, I) I), one having an aperture, (Z, and with the end lapping lips, c, alLin one piece, in combination with the file B,having the stud d, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
XAVIEB ST. PIERRE.
