WITJVESSES N. FKTERS, Fhnmuuwgnplmr. wnmingnm. D. C,
NITE rares JOSEPH P. PRESTON, OF IRVINGTON, NEBRASKA.
SAFETY POCKETv ATTACH IVI ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,797, dated November 117 1884.
Application filed April 5, 1884. (No model.)
To @ZZ r11/1,0m, it may concern.-
G indicates the clamping device, which con- Be it known that I, JOSEPH P. PRESTON, a sists of two flat bars or plates, b, having their citizen of the United States, residing at lrl flat sides arranged parallel with relation to vington, in the State ot' Nebraska, have inl each other, and provided near their ends with vented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Pocket Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
rlhe object of my invention is to provide a cheap and simple means for securing a pocketbook or other articles of value in the pocket of the owner in such a manner that the said articles may be quickly secured in'thc pocket and as quickly removed by the wearer of the garment, but not by others-such as thieves or pickpticketswithout the knowledge ofthe owner.
Another object of my invention is to pre- Y' vent a pocket-bool; or the like from leaving the pocket of a person by the jolting and vibratory movement of avehiele in passing over rough roads. n
My invention may be applied to any article of a sufficient size to be carried in the pocket, butis more especially adapted to pncket-books and porte-monnaies, as from its peculiar construction and arrangement ot parts it may be readily applied to pocket-books of various sizes and bulk without puckering or disfignring the appearance of the garment.
In the accompanying drawings, to which similar letters ot' reference are made indicating corresponding parts, Figure l is a representation ot' a sectional view of a pocket, showing my invention applied in connection with apocket-book. Fig. 2 is a side view of a clamping device removed from the pocket and pocket-book.
In the said drawings, the letter A indicates the pocket ot' a garment, t0 the inner Waller lining ot' which I secure at a suitable interval two buttons or studs, a, to receive, respectively, the eyes of a strap or bar, B, which may be allowed to remain in the pocket of a garment on which my invention is to be used, but is so constructed that the loops or eyes may be slipped over the buttons and the strap entirely removed from the pocket when desired.
aligned holes or perforations c, through which are inserted threaded bolts d, which may be headed at one end, and provided at the opposite end with thumb-nuts. as shown, whereby the bars or plates may be brought together to clamp a pocket-book or other articles of various sizes or bulk. To one of these plates Z), about midway its length, I secure by means of a swivel a short arm, e, and to the outer end of this arm I hinge another arm, f, ot greater length, the object being to allow the device, when inserted into the pocket, to occupy the smallest possible space.
The clamping device, when in a pocket, will form a rectangularparcel of flat contour. The outer end of .the armf is provided with an eye, as shown, to receive one of the chainlinks g, which carries a snap-hook, D, which is designed to engage the button-band or strap when thedevice is inserted into the pocket.
From the foregoing description the advantages and operation of my invention will be obvious. The device is simple in construe tion, and may be manu t'actu red at averysmall expense.
Having thus described my invention,`what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a garment-pocket having two studs or buttons, arranged as described, ot the strap or bar having a button- `hole at opposite ends, the snap-hook and chain, the clamping device consisting of the plates having perforations near their opposite ends, the threaded bolts, thumb-nuts,and swiveled hinge-bar, all adapted to operate substantially as and for the purposes specified.
' ln testimony whereof l affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH P. PRESTON.
