(Cl. 4-159) This invention relates to a novel rinsing cape for use 7 particularly in the rinsing operations necessary in administration of permanent cold waves.

The primary object of the invention is to provide an eflicient and easily used device of this kind which elimi nates the wetting of the neck, ears and shoulders oftthe patron and the splashing about of spray water which are incidental to the repeated rinsings involved in neutralization steps, and which subject the patron to discomfort and inconvenience, as well as the operator, and increase the difiiculty and expense of maintaining the equipment in a sanitary and attractive condition.

Another object of the invention is to provide a-simple, inexpensive, unbulky device of the character indicated above which completely encloses the hair of the patron, from the forehead back to the shoulders, so that spray water applied within the device to the hair is more efficiently and economically used, the device having an adjustable access opening through which the spray nozzle and the hand of the operator are inserted and which can be closed around the wrist of the operator during rinsing operations to prevent escape of water and waving solution.

Other important objects and advantageous features of the invention will be apparent from the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein, for

purposes of illustration only, .a specific form of the invention is set forth in detail.

FIGURE 2 is a rear elevation showing the device partially -applied to the hair and head of a patron;

FIGURE 3 is a view similar to FIGURE 2, showing the device closed up around the hair in fully applied condition; and,

FIGURE 4 is an enlarged fragmentary horizontal section taken on the line 44- of FIGURE 3.

Referring in detail to the drawings, wherein like numerals designate like parts throughout the several views, the illustrated device, generally designated 10, comprises a substantially segmental flexible sheet 12, of suitable relatively unstretchable material, such as plastic, which is sufiiciently transparent to enable the hair of the patron, the hand of the operator, and a spray nozzle, to be seen therethrough when the device is fully applied to the head of the patron.

The sheet 12 has a downwardly and outwardly divergent first side edge 14 which is composed of a main lower straight portion 16 and a minor upper and inwardly and upwardly curved portion 18, which are closed with plastic covered, or other suitable material binding 20, secured in suitable manner therealong.

Extending longitudinally inwardly from the upper end of the curved upper side edge portion 18, the sheet 12 has a downwardly curved upper edge 22, which is slightly gathered as indicated at 24, and is enclosed in stretchable resilient binding 26, suitably secured therealong. The upper edge 22 is the forehead engaging element of the device, and has fixed thereon at related ends thereof, male and female separable fasteners, such as gripper snaps 28 and 30, respectively. The binding 26 has free ends 32 and 34, which serve as tabs for conveniently and easily applying the upper edge 22 to the forehead, in a stretched condition, and engaging the snaps 28 and 30.

nited States Patent ice and has secured therealong plastic coated binding 38, the bindings 26 and 38 being preferably bias type bindings. In addition, the second side edge 36 is characterized by having suitably secured therealong and extending laterally or longitudinally outwardly therefrom, a vertically elongated substantially uniform width flap 40, preferably of sheet plastic, to protectively underly and bridge any gap between the side edges 14 and 36, and their fastening means, .and keep'these things out of uncomfortable contact with the neck and shoulders of the patron. The material of the sheet 12 is formed with a vertical dart 4 2,at the upper edge 22, near the second side edge 36, and with a horizontal dart 44, at the second side edge 36, near the upper edge 22, and with several horizontal darts 46 at the first side edge 14, near the upper edge 22, so as to give the sheet desirable concavities in the areas of the darts.

Secured to related sides of the side edge bindings 26 and 38 are male and female gripper fasteners 48 and 50, respectively, which are to be severally engaged with each other in the closed up condition of the device 10, as shown in FIGURE 3.

The sheet 12 has a longitudinally and downwardly curved lower edge 52 which has a blind, V-shaped in-' dentation 54, near the second side edge 36, and a vertical slot 56 which is located between the indentation 54 and the second side edge 36. The lower edge 52 is enclosed in a plastic covered bias binding 53 which is suitably secured therealong.

The slot 56 has straight lower edge portions 69, which are coextensive with each other, and concavely curved upper edge portions 62, which are joined at their upper ends, so as to form an oblong wrist and had access opening 64 in the sheet 12, at a location midway between the upper edge 22 and the lower edge 52 and near to the second side edge 36. The edges of the slot 56 are enclosed in suitably secured plastic covered bias binding 66. Secured along the straight edge portions 60 are spaced male and female snap fasteners 68 and 70, respectively, which are to be engaged with each other to close the lower part of the slot, while elastic binding '72, suitably secured along the curved upper edge portions 62, serves to contact the edges of the opening 64 around the wrist of the operator, when extended therethrough.

To apply the device 10 to the head of a patron, the upper edge 22 is held by the tabs 32, 34 and stretched and wrapped upwardly from the nape of the neck, under the gathered hair, and brought upwardly around the sides of the head, and then secured across the forehead with the fasteners 28 and 30. The edge 22 is then manipulated so as to free the ears of the patron, and so that the edge 22 engages the sides of the head just above the ears, as indicated in FIGURE 2.

The side edges 14 and 36 of the device 10 are then brought rearwardly and upwardly around the hair, and the fasteners 48 and 50 engaged, so these edges overlap and are secured together, as shown in FIGURES 3 and 4, with the flap 40 bridging the juncture. This makes of the sheet 12 a tube which is closed, at its upper end, by the patrons hair and head, but which is open at its lower end, to drain rinse water and waving solution into a suitable receptacle, provided for the purpose. As shown in FIGURES 2 and 3, the vertical dimension or height of the sheet 12 is such that the open lower end of the applied device 10, indicated at 70, is positioned well below the patrons nape, and preferably part way down the back, so that the lower end of the device can be swung away from the patron and positioned with open lower end thereof well within a receptacle.

The device 10 having been applied, as above described,

the operator passes a hand, holding a rinsing hose nozzle girth of the operators wrist, adjusts the initial size of the opening 64 by engaging one or more pairs of the snap fasteners 68 and 70, whereat the elastic binding 72 of the opening contracts around the wrist and makes a Watertight junction therewith. The operator then works the nozzle over the hair Within the device for the rinsing operations, watching the work through the transparent sheet 12, while the resultant water and solution drain from the device into a receptacle, without attention from or interference with the work of the operator and without wetting the patron or her clothes, or adjacent equipment.

While there has been shown and described herein a preferred form of the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not necessarily confined thereto, and that any change or changes in the structure of and in the relative arrangements of components thereof are contemplated as being within the scope of the invention as defined by the claims appended hereto,

What is claimed is:

1. A hair rinsing device comprising a flexible tube having an open lower end adapted to drain hair treating liquid from the head of a subject, the upper end of the tube being gathered and being extensible, an elastic strip secured along said upper end and adapted to be stretched to encircle the upper part of the head of a subject and to be relaxed to contract around the head of the subject whereby the upper part of the head of the subject is enclosed against leaking of liquid between the upper end of the tube and the head, within the upper part of the tube, and means for separably connecting the ends of the said upper edge together for constricting the upper end of the tube around the head, the wall of the tube having an opening spaced upwardly from the lower edge of the tube, said opening being large enough to admit the hand of an operator for applying hair treating liquid 53. to the subjects head within the tube and manipulating the subjects hair.

2. A hair rinsing device comprising a flexible tube having an open lower end adapted to drain hair treating liquid from the head of a subject, the upper end of the tube being gathered and being extensible, an elastic strip secured along said upper end and adapted to be stretched to encircle the upper part of the head of a subject and to be relaxed to contract around the head of the subject whereby the upper part of the head of the subject is enclosed against leaking of liquid between the upper end of the tube and the head, within the upper part of the tube, and means for separably connecting the ends of the said upper edge together for constricting the upper end .of the tube around the head, the wall of the tube having an opening spaced upwardly from the lower edge of the tube, said opening being large enough to admit the hand of an operator for applying hair treating liquid to the subjects head within the tube and manipulating the subjects hair, said tube comprising a sheet having upwardly convergent side edges and a concave upper edge, means separably connecting said side edges in overlapping relationship.
