Description

June 17, 1952 T. s. CANCELL SHAMPOQ DEVICE Filed Dec. 4, 1945 INVENTOR THEQDO/PASCAA/CELL ATTORNEY Patented June 17, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE a SHAMPOO DEVICE Theodora S'. Cancel], Larchmont, N. Y;
Application December 4, 1945, Serial No. 632,752
4'Claims. 1
This invention relates to an improved shampoo shield "designed for home use or in beauty parlors, barber shops and the like.
It is one of the objects of the invention to provide an improved shield which may be adjustably applied. about the head of a child or adult below or adjacent the hair line so as effectively to prevent soap suds or water from running down over the face and into the eyes or ears or dripping onto the clothing of the wearer.
It is a further object of the invention to provide, in combination with a shampoo shield, a water run-01f trough or apron that is attached or attachable to the shield in position to receive the overflow of wash'water and to lead it to a wash basin or other point of disposal without dripping upon the clothing of the person being shampooed or upon the floor and which at the same time permits the wearer to sit upright without discomfort.
It is a still further object of the invention to provide a combination shampoo shield and water run-off apron whereof the shampoo shield may be easily adjusted to heads of different sizes while maintaining the run-off apron properly centered with respect to the shield.
Still other features of the invention reside in the provision of improved sealing means encircling the shield and in the use of relatively inexpensive, light synthetic plastic materials to form elements of the complete structure.
Further advantages and objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one form of device embodying the invention, shown as applied to the head;
Fig.2 is a detail sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a modified form of device embodying the invention, shown as applied to the head likewise as in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view with parts broken away taken on the line 44 of Fig. 3.
In the embodiment of the invention represented by Figs. 1 and 2, 5 designates generally the shampoo shield comprising an upwardly extending, outwardly flaring member 6 which is preferably made of a light, relatively still but bendable material such as a suitable plastic, for example, one of the cellulose derivatives, cellulose nitrate and cellulose acetate. Various other plastic materials such as appropriately plasticized ureaformaldehyde resins, methacrylate resins and vinyl resins may also be used. The plastic material may be suitably pigmented or left in its 2 natural state of transparency or color as the case may be.
As shown in Fig. l, the shieldmember' 6 is attached along its lower edge to a first portion 1 of a sealing band or strip preferably made of sponge rubber or similar soft resilient material and capable when drawn around the head of conforming closely to the contour of the head without exerting undue pressure and causing discomfort to the child or other individual being subjected to a shampooing treatment. The sealing band also includes a second portion ll, of similar construction, which is adapted to extend between the ends of the portion 1 and to overlap those ends. In the form of the device shown in Fig. 1. the sealing band portion 1 is separate from the portion H and terminates at the rearward edges of the shield. member 6 and is provided with a series of attaching members 8, 8 on each side. These members 8, which may be ordinary snap fasteners, are adapted to be brought into fastening engagement with the complementary members 9, 9 carried at the ends ll) of the portion I lwhich is adhered or otherwise secured to a backing strip II of fabric, softrubber sheeting or other suitable flexible material.
As shown in Fig. I, the backing strip l 2 forms a continuation of a flexible attachment portion l3 of the tray M. It will be understood that the attaching members 8, 8 and 9, '9 provide for adjustment of the length of the two-piece sealing sealing band or strip 1,. ll to the size of the head of the particular'individual and at the same time make it possible to keep the tray I4 centered with respect to the shield. Besides the attachment portion iii, the tray It comprises a stiff troughlike member I15 curved up at the sides as at Hi to guide the water used'in the washing or shampooing operation along the trough to the Wash basin or other point of disposal, while at the same time preventing draining of the water onto the clothing or down the neck of the individualbeing shampooed. The member l5, likewise as the.
member 6, may be formed of a suitable synthetic plastic or resinous material.
gusset [3 may be formed of any suitable pliable sheet material, such as, for example, a waterproofed fabric or rubber sheeting.
According to the modifications of Figs. 3 and The attachment ed to be brought into fastening engagement with the complementary fastening members 8, 8 carried at one side of the shield member 6. In this modification the tray M is detachable from the rearward portion of the band I. In order to provide a sealing connection between the tray l4 and the band I, the band I along its rearward section is provided with an overlapping strip l! which may be a continuation of the backing strip 12. The flexible attachment portion l3 of the tray I4 is provided with a row of eyelets 18 along its upper edge and is adapted to be inserted underneath the strip I1 and attached to the sealing strip 1' through interengagement of the eyelets with the fasteners 19 carried by the member 12. It will be understool that a sufficient numberof the fasteners l9 are provided to permit of adjustment of the tray l4 laterally to insure proper centering in conformity with the positioning of the member I which will vary depending on the size of thehead and the consequent adjustment of the position of the end [0 with respect to the fastening members 8, 8 and 9, 9.
In either of the modifications shown it will be understood that the rear portion of the sealing band, whether it takes the form of the separate member ll of Fig. 1 or the continuation of the single strip 1 of Fig. 2, serves to catch the water that may run down the scalp toward the nape of the neck and acts as a weir over which excess water may flow into the tray 14. While the shield 6 is shown as terminating rearwardly about in line with the ears, it will be understood that it may be carried further back if desired or even be continuous providing an opening is left for discharge of the water over the rear portion of the sealing band. Various other changes in the details of the construction may be made without departing from the invention, which is not to be deemed as limited otherwise than as indicated by the appended claims,
