Application November 19, 1957, Serial No. 697,391
2 Claims. (Cl. 12S-11) This invention relates to improvements in grinding wheel dressing devices, and more particularly to novel stationary and angular adjusting types of grinding wheel dressing devices.
An object of the invention is to provide devices of the type which maybe utilized to dress a plane or a concave face on a grinding wheel.
Another object of the invention is to provide a mechanisrn for truing or dressing the side of a grinding wheell mounted and in operation on a precision type grinding machine.
Another object `of the invention is to provide efiicientVv Fig. 1 is a side view in elevation of a grinding wheel dressing device embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a front View of the same attached to the guard lip of a grinder.
Fig. 3 illustratesV the concave grinding operation.
Fig. 4 is a detail view of the device partly vin section.
Fig. 5 is a side view in elevation of a modified form of the device.
Fig. 6 is a front view in elevation of the same.
Fig. 7 is a view lin vertical section taken on line 7-7 5 of Fig. 5.
Fig. 8 is a plan view thereof.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 refers to a conventional grinding wheel pro vided with agguard 11 and the adjustable lip 12. The invention herein is comprised of a bracket 13 which is affixed to lip 12 by bolt means 14. A housing 15 is affixed to the lower end of the bracket 13 and extends laterally at right angles therefrom. An actuating shaft 16 is carried horizontally within the housing 15 and at the outer end thereof has the enlarged portion 17 which is bored at 18 to accommodate the extension arm A plurality of llevelling screws insure that the bracket 13 can be fixed perpendicular to the grinding wheel 10.
The extension arm 19 may be fixed at selected posi tion by means of the set screw 20 and has the enlarged Y The activatingshaft 16 is provided with an external thread lat 25 which engages in the internal thread 26 of the housing 15. A coil spring Z7 is anchored at 28 of the activating shaft 16 and at the other end thereof by the pin 29 in the cap 30. The cap 36 is retained in the bracket 13 by threaded means 31. A cap 32 at the opposite end of the housing 15 is fixed in place by the threaded means 33.
The micrometer shaft may be fixed by the locking pin 34 and the threaded means 35.
In Figs. 5 to 8 a modified form of the invention is shown. A bracket 40 is provided with the sleeve 41 which journals the support shaft 42. An indicator needle 43 is affixed to the lower portion of the sleeve 41. The lower portion of the support shaft 42 carries the activating shaft housing 44 which is surmounted by a washer 45 and the Vernier angle plate 46.
The housing 44 and the Vernier plate 46 are keyed to the supporting shaft 42 at 47 and 48. A lock screw 49 may be used to fix the angular adjustment of the device. The activating shaft housing 44 is comprised of a cap 50, a bearing housing 51 and the cap plate 52. The activating shaft 53 is held within the bearing cylinder S1 by the ball bearing assemblies 54 and 55 and has a thread at 56 which is in mesh with the internal thread at S7 of the collar 58. A coil spring is fixed to the pin 59 in the shaft 53 and by its opposite end to the pin 60 in the cap 50. A washer 61 and retaining screw 62 are provided for the lower end of the support shaft 42.
In use, before a wheel is to be dressed, the operator makes proper adjustments of the extension arm 19 and the micrometer shaft housing 22 and the micrometer shaft 23. The latter may be rested in uppermost position against the guard 11. When the micrometer shaft and related parts areremoved downwardly in an arc, it will be understood. that the turning movement of the activating shaft will withdraw it inwardly of the housing thus causing the diamond tool 65 to dress the adjacent face of the grinding wheel 10 in a convex or saucer shape. An adjustment may be made by longitudinal movement and fixing of the micrometer shaft housing and also of the Amicrometer thimble. In the modified form of the device shown in Figs. 5 to 8, the housing 44 maybe moved about a vertical axis and fixed in place, whereby an angular cut may be made on the peripheral portion from the wheel 10.
It will be understood that the device is capable of many modifications in structure and design, without departing from the spirit of the invention, within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. A grinding wheel dressing device including a flat bracket for mounting the unit on a grinding wheel guard, a housing fixed to said bracket at right angles thereto, an activating shaft journaled in said housing, an extension arm held transversely of said actuating shaft, a micrometer shaft held for longitudinal movement in an endv of said extension arm, a diamond tool held axially in said micrometer shaft adapted to engage against a grinding wheel face for dressing the same, and threaded means for imparting inward movement of said activating shaft as Y 3 i e 4 the same is rotated during movement to the right of the the diamond tool and intervening parts of the mech-V diamond tool and intervening parts of the mechanism.` ansm, andspring means urging return outwardly of the 2.
