Abstract
311,597. Moss Gear Co., Ltd., and Gregory, E. July 19, 1928. Turning.-The grinding-wheels employed in the production of worm gearing are prepared or trued by means of a device comprising oscillating diamond tools for trimming the sides of the wheel and a separate tool for operating upon the peripheral edge. A stud 6 is screwed at 6a into the frame of the machine and carries a split sleeve 7<a> secured' by a screw 7f and having a depending bracket portion 7 which straddles the grinding wheel 8. Extensions on the bracket are fitted with plates 7<h> adapted to bear on fixed projections on the machine frame. Each leg of the bracket 7 is bored to receive the trunnion 15a of a casing 15 which accommodates aT-shaped sleeve 12. The horizontal portion of this sleeve carries the sliding holder 11 of the diamond tool 9, adjustment being effected from a micrometer head 13. The upper end of the sleeve carries a screw cap 16 which may be locked by a plunger 17 and screw 16<a>. The stud 6 also carries a sleeve 20<b> adjustable by a screw 7<g> and having a depending portion 20. This sleeve carries a loose sleeve 22a on the upper end of a holder 22 carrying a diamond 23 for trimming the periphery of the wheel. For the preliminary trimming of the side faces, the wheel is rotated and the casing 15 is swung about the trunnion 15a. The side face is then radiused by swinging the casing into engagement with a stop 7<k>, releasing the cap 16, and rotating the sleeve 12 about its axis, the diamond thus moving in an arcuate path in a plane containing the grinding wheel axis.
