Be it known that 1, JOHN E. SHERMAN, of North Attleborough, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scratch- Gages, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to gages used by carpenters and others for scratching or scribing work; and it consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts in such devices, including a slide and thumb-piece both arranged upon the rod or stock of the device and constructed to engage with each other by. means of a split screw and taper socket, for locking and releasing the slide upon the rod,

to provide for adjustment of the gage, also including a many-pointed scratcher or marker upon the end of the rod, the whole being preferably so constructed that it may be used to perform itswork without restriction to any one side of the device being uppermost, whereby the gage maybe much more quickly and easily applied and the durability of the many-pointed marker is increased.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 represents a longitudinal view of a scratch-gage embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section of the same, in part, upon a larger scale; Fig. 3, a face view of an adjustable thumb-piece, forming one of the details, detached; Fig. 4., alongitudinal section of the marking end portion of the rod or stock of the gage, with the many-pointed marker at tached; and Fig. 5, a face view of the same.

A indicates the stock, bar, or rod of the device, preferably of circular form, as are also the other details of the device, and whereby, among other advantages,the scratch-gage may be used without restriction to any particular side being uppermost, which will greatly facilitate the use of the instrument. Upon this stock or bar A is fitted a slide, B, forming the head of the gage, and which, when of circular form, as shown, projects equally from all sides of the rod; also a sliding thumb-piece or clamp, 0, having projecting from its face a screw, 1),

which is constructed with three (more or less) longitudinal slits, 0, extending inward from the outer end of the screw, which outer end is of round or taper form, as shown in Fig. 2, to bear within or against a taper'socket portion, (I, at the inner end of a female-screwthreaded portion, 0, in the slide B, so that when the thumb-piece C is screwed up, the split hollow screw Z), engaging with the slide 13, will be closed upon and caused to clamp the rod A, and so hold the slide B at its proper position upon the rod A and at the required distance from the marker D, according to the adjustment of the gage. If preferred, this construction of the thumb-piece O and slide B may be reversed-that is to say, the split screw may be on the slide and the socket which it fits in the thumb-piece.

The marker D is a many-pointed circular one, which may be secured to the working end of the bar A by a screw, f, or otherwise, and which will have its durability increased by the circular construction of the gage, that causes different scratching-points to bebrought at different times into action. Only a slight turn of the thumb-piece is necessary either to release or clamp the slide B, which permits of its ready adjustment along the bar.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A scratch-gage in which is combined a rod or stock having a marker on its forward end, and a head or slide and thumb-piece, both fitted to move on and along said rod, and constructed,respective1y,with ahollow split screw and tapering screw-threaded socket in the axial line of the rod, for release and hold of the slide on the rod, and to provide for adjustment of the gage, substantially as specified.

2. In ascratch-gage, the combination of the circular rod A, having a marker on its forward end, and the slide B and thumb-piece C, in splitscrew and tapering-socket connection with each other in the axial line of the rod, as described, and constructed to move along and turn upon said rod when the split screw is released from grip thereon, essentially as and for the purpose herein set forth.

3. In a scratch-gage, the combination of the many-pointed marker D with the rod A and piece 0, provided with a hollow split clamp the slide B and thumb-piece O, in split-screw ing-sorew, b, the Whole being constructed and I0 and tapering-socket connectionwith each other arranged for operation substantially as shown in the axial line of the rod andfor adjustment and described.
