LLOYD F. NELSON, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
COMBINATION PENCIL AND SCBIBE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 20, 1919.
Application filed. October 25, 1917. Serial No. 198,516.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LLOYD F. NELSON, citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of ashing-ton, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Pencils and Scribes, of which the following is a specification.
.his invention relates to improvements in combination pencil and scribe and has for its principal object to provide an improved and novel combination scribe and pencil which has means for permitting the use of either the pencil or the scribe and at the same time moving the other member into a protected position. Another object of my device is to provide adjustable means for connecting the scribe point and pencil in order that the pencil may be adjusted for wear. In carpentry and the like it is usual on dry lumber to use a pencil and when the lumber is wet and rough to use a scribe of the pencil. It is frequently necessary to interchange the use of the pencil and scribe many times during the course of the days work. In order to combine the two in a single tool which is quickly and easily adjustable to meet the desired conditions is the object of my device.
Other objects will appear as my invention is more fully explained in the following specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the din wings Figure 1 is a plan of my device shown with the scribe extended and the pencil withdrawn. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the scribe, and pencil connecting means shown removed from the casing.
Referring more particularly to the drawing numeral 1 indicates an outer casing which is preferably of cylindrical form and which is fitted at one end with a tapered and centrally bored point 2 and at the other end is longitudinally slotted as at ,3. The inner end of slot 3 is enlarged laterally as at 4 to permit the restricted rotation of a connect ing member between the pencil and scribe, as will be more fully pointed out later. The slot 3 enables the casing 1 to adjust itself to snugly fit a pencil 5. The outer or pointed end of the pencil 5 is normally just within the end of a casing when a scribe 6 is extended beyond the outer end of the point 2. It will be understood that the scribe 6 passesslidably through the central hole in the point :2. Casing 1 is provided with a slot 7 near the scribe end of the casing. The slot 7 has lateral extension slots 8 at either end. Scribe 6 is provided with an upstanding thumb latch 9 which is extended through the slot 7 and is secured to a follower 9 and is adapted to engage either of the lateral slots 8. An extension bar 10 connects the inner end of pencil 5 and the follower 9 so that the scribe and pencil move along simultaneously. The pencil and extension bar may move laterally or not as the case may be, the connecting bar being movable with respect to the thumb latch 9. The connecting bar 10 is preferably off-set as at 11 and has an inwardly extending point which is driven into the wood of the pencil. It will be understood that when the scribe is in use the device is as shown in Fig. l and when it is desired to bring the pencil into use the thumb latch 9 is shoved into the slot 7 and along the slot to its opposite end from which it is moved into the slot 8, thereby extending the pencil beyond the casing 1, and with drawing the point of the scribe within the point 2. When it is desired to again use the scribe this operation is reversed.
While I have shown a particular form of embodiment of my invention, I am aware that many minor changes therein will readily suggest themselves to others skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
1. In a combination scribe and pencil the combination of a tubular casing having a longitudinal and offset slot extending from one end thereof and a longitudinal slot having lateral extension slots adjacent the other end of the said casing, and in alinement with the first mentioned slot, a tapered and hollow point formed at the end of the said casing which is adjacent the last mentioned slot, a pencil slidably mounted in the opposite end of the said casing, a follower secured to the inner end of a scribe, an extension bar connecting the said follower at one end and adjustably connected to the inner end of the said pencil at the other end, whereby the pencil may be moved longitudinally beyond the end of the casing simultaneously while the scribe is with-drawn within the casing.
2. In a combination scribe and pencil the combination of a tubular casing having a longitudinal and ofiset slot extending from one end thereof and a longitudinal slot having lateral extension slots adjacent the other end of the said casing and in alinement with the first mentioned slot a tapered and hollow point formed at the end of the said casing which is adjacent the last mentioned slot, a pencil slidably mounted in the opposite end of the said casing, a follower secured to the inner end of a scribe, an extension bar connecting with the said follower at one end and adjustably connected to the inner end of the said pencil at the other end, whereby the pencil may be moved longitudinally beyond the end of the casing simultaneously while the scribe is with-drawn within the casing. A latch secured to the said follower and cooperating with an offset portion of the firstinentioned slot, a coiled spring wrapped around the said scribe and intermediate the said follower and the inner end of the hollow 20 point, whereby the scribe is normally withdrawn within the casing when the latch is disengaged from the said ofi'set.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
LLOYD F. NELSON.
