Description

W. B. SEWAR-D.
EVAPORA'TING PAN.
I Patented Dec..11, 1883.
(N0 Model.)
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VIELIAMSON SEWARD, OF BLOOMINGTON, INDIANA.
EV APO RATING-PAN.
srncrrrcn'rron forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,193, dated December 11, 1883.
Application filed March 26. 1883. (No model.)
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAMSON B. SEW- ARD, of Bloomington, county of Monroe, State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Evaporating- Pan; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, which will enable those skilled in the artto make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My present invention has relation to the improvement of evaporating-pans which are divided into compartments connected together in such manner that the saccharine juice in passing through the pan shall flow from end to end of each compartment throughout the series. I
The object of my invention is to provide an improved attachment for or addition to such pans which shall serve effectually to prevent the scum that rises in one compartment from passing with the juice into an adjoining one, so that this juice, as it issues from the discharge end of the pan, shall be free from scum, and of greater purity than heretofore. This object of invention I have accomplished by the improved construction hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly defined in the claims at the end of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the evaporating-pan with my improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail view in horizontal section through one of the skimming-cups of the pan. Fig. 3 is a detail view in vertical section on line 00 w of Fig. 1, showing the construction of cup and portion of the pan.
The evaporating-pan consists of several metallic compartments, A, connected to the wooden sides B in the usual manner. compartment of the series is provided at each end with an opening, 0, located as shown in the drawings, so that the opening in the end of one compartment shall be in proximity to the corresponding opening in the adjoining compartment, and to the sides of the pan and in front of these openings are attached the scum-arresting cups D, through which the Each the partition E, that serves to arrest the scum,
which may be removed from time to'time, and serves, also, to receive sediment deposited from the juice.
I am fully aware that it has been heretofore proposed to construct an evaporating-pan having a series of compartments communicating through open outside channels extending the length of the pan, and provided with slidevalves,;the purpose of this construction being mixed with that of another at a remotepart of the pan. 1' do not wish, therefore, to be understood as claiming such eonstructiomwhich I regard as radically different from mine; but
What I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A cup, D, for attachment to evaporatingpans, having a partition, E, therein for arresting scum, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the evaporatingpan having compartments provided with openings c, of the skimming-cups D, having the partitions E therein located between the openings c, and terminating above the bottoms of the cups, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with an evaporatingpan having compartments provided with the openings therein, of skimming-cups upon the sides of the pan of a depth greater than that of the pan, and provided with partitions 1ocated between the openings of the compartments, and terminating above the bottoms of the cups, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAMSON B. SEWARD.
