Description

(No Model) I. N. NULL.
EVAPOBATOR. No 269,877. Patented Jan. 2, 1883 ig-1 A A UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC N. NULL, OF WINSTON, NORTH CAROLINA.
EVAPORATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,877, dated January 2, 183.
Application filed August 11, 1882. (No model.)
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC N. NULL, of \Vinston, in the county of Forsyth and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Evaporators; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view of my improved evaporating-pan. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on the line mm, Fig. 1. Fig.3 is a vertical sectional view on the-line y 3 Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the strainer detached.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to evaporatingpans for the juices of sugar, sorghum, and the like; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In thedrawings hereto an neXed, Arepresents my improved evaporating-pan, which is L- shaped in outline, or consisting of a main body, B, having at its lower end an extension or branch, U. The latter is separated from the former by a partition, D, having at one end an opening, which may be closed by a gate,E. I prefer to so regulate the proportions that the length from the angle F to the end of either the main body B or branch 0 shall be about equal,
as shown in the drawings. By this construction a man standing at the angle can easily reach andstir the sirup at either end of the pan, which by the common practice of making the pans rectangular is not readily practicable. By my improved construction 1 am thus enabled to dispense with the labor of one man, as by the ordinary construction the services of two persons are required to keep the sirup J from scorching.
Both of the compartments B and C of my improved pan ale.provided with transverse plates G, extending alternately from opposite sides, in the usual manner, for the. purpose of retarding the flow of the sirup. The compartment 0 is provided at its outer-end with an escape-opening, which may be closed by a gate, H.
I is a strainer, made of wire-netting or other suitable material, secured to a plate, J, having a flange, K. Said flanged plate may be adjusted, as shown in Fig. 1, upon theuppe-r edge of any one of the partition-plates G, so as to placethe strainer over the space or opening between such plate and the opposite wall of the pan. One or more such strainers may be used, and they may easily be adjusted wherever they may be required. They are especially used near the upper end of the main body B of the pan for the purpose of preventing the scum from passing on with the sirup as the latter thickens.
The operation and advantages of my iui ention will be readily understood by those familiar with this class of devices. It is simple, inexpensive, and exceedingly convenient.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The herein-descril. ed improved evaporatingpan, consisting of the L-shaped pan A, having partition I), provided with gate E, and transverse platesG,extendingalternately from each side Wall toward the other, in both compartments of pan A, for the purpose of retarding the flow ot' sirup, in combination with the strainer l, secured to a plate, J, having flange K, whereby it may be secured detachably upon any one of the plates Gr at any desired'point in either compartment of the pan, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as
