JEROME w. ROPP, or ELYRIA, OHIO.
" STRAP-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,408, dated May 13, 1884.
(No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JEROME XV. RoPr, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Elyria,
have invented a new and useful Splice-Protector for Straps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in protectors for the ends of laps or splices of leather or other straps, belts, or webs when joined together; and its object is to provide a protector for such lap or splice ends as will elifectually prevent their becoming loosened or rolling up, to be easily and quickly applied, and be furnished at small expense. I attain these objects by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figures 1 and 2 represent perspective views of my invention. Figs. 3 and 4 represent views of the fastener shown in Figs. 1 and 2, respectively, as applied to each end of alap or splice to a strap. I
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the different views.
A represents the top of my device, or that part that covers the end of the lap or splice of the leather or other material joined together.
a a represent two arms extending from opposite sides of the top A, bent and of sufficient length to meet in the middle of the under side of the top A, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings; or said arms may only be long enough to extend even with the opposite side of the leather, or nearly so, to which the cap A is fastened; or said arms may be long enough to turn over and clamp on the under side of the leather or material, as a to, Figs. 2 andd. In the first instance above described, a hole is made through the under side of the material at the point Where the arms a a meet, and the points of the arms a a are then driven forcibly into said hole, and said arms a a drawn I thereby firmly and securely around said strap or other material. In the third instance above described, the arms aa are forcibly bent over 5 upon said strap or other material. A rivetjs then securely fastened through said top A, and
said rivet holds said device securely in its proper position.
b represents a lip turned down on the outside edge of the top of A, for the purpose of more perfectly and securely covering the end of said lap or splice.
G is a rivet, to be used for securing my device when attached to a strap.
The operation of my invention is as follows, to wit: The strap or material to be spliced is first lapped and sewed together in the ordinary or usual way; or the same may be ce-. mented orfastenedin any othermanner. Then a suitable hole is made at the proper position, near each end of the splice or lap, and the protector placed in such a position that the top A and the lip 12 will just extend over and cover perfectly the end of the lap or splice, and it is then securely fastened by means of either of the methods above described.
The protector, being made of metal or other suitable material, effectually holds the end of the splice or lap in place, and prevents any wear or tear coming against the end of the splice or lap to start it up or loosen it in any manner.
lVhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is 7 5 A cap, A, provided with the lip 12, and arms, as described, in combination with the rivet 0, all as above set forth, and substantially as described.
JEROME W. R-OPP.
