Description

UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB w. BRAAM, or ORAPO, MICHIGAN.
LEAF-HOLDER.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 297,665, dated April 29, 1884.
Application filed December 29, 1883. (No model.)
To ail whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB W. BRAAM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Crapo, in the county of Mecosta and State of Micl1igan,have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Leaf-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
- My invention relates especially to devices employed for holding the leaves of music or other books in an open or extended position, and has for its object the provision of a device cheap and simple to construct, and which will be effective in operation. a
To attain this end my invention consists, essentially, in two sheet-metal or cast plates, so shaped as to be readily grasped by the hand, said plates being provided with ears projecting at-right angles to the body of the metal, andengaging with each other in such a manner as to form hinges. Oneof said plates bears a wire bent in the form of an ellipse, adapted and arranged to press upon the leaves of a book to hold them open. or extended, the other metal plate passing downward at'the back of the book. A suitable spring placed between the plates presses one extremity of the device against the book. The holder is unclasped from the book or opened for placing thereon by grasping .the plates in one hand at their upper extremities, and the device will be found admirably adapted to the uses and purposes for which it is intended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved leaf-holder, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation. employed for holding the leaves of a music book open. I
Like letters-of reference, wherever they oc- Fig. 3 shows the device as our, indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A is the front plate of the device, having a wire, B, bent in the form of an ellipse, attached to its lower extremity. A is the back plate, made longer than plate-A, in order to extend downward at the back of the book. a a are ears attached to or forming portions of plates A A, said ears being perforated for the passage of a rivet, b, forming a hinge at each edge of the plates.
0 is a spring held in place between the two plates by means of studs 0 c, and serving to press the lower extremities of the device against the back and leaves of a-book when in use. i A
My improved leaf-holder is not only very cheap to make and easy to operate, but the wire B, while serving to retain the leaves in position, does not hide the music or other printed matter of the book.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A leaf-holder consisting of plates A A, hinged to each other, as set forth, wire extension B, and spring 0, the whole combined and arranged to operate substantially as shown and described.
Il1 testimony that I claim theforegoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 23d day of November, 1883.
J. w. BRAAM.
