An object of the invention is to provide a glass replacement tool for removing a pane of glass from, or inserting a pane of glass into the channel frame of a ventilating section of a motor vehicle window having one open side.
Another object of the invention is to provide a glass replacement tool for the above designated purpose which grasps a pane of glass to be acted upon at a point intermediate its edges rather than at one of its edges, thus reducing the likelihood of chipping or shattering the glass when the removing or inserting force is applied.
Another object of the invention is to provide a glass replacement tool for the above designated purpose which may be moved to grasp a pane of glass to be acted upon at successive points adjacent the edges being removed from or inserted in a window frame, thus minimizing the stress to which the glass is subjected when the removing or inserting force is applied.
A further object of the invention is to provide a glass replacement tool which may be easily applied to a window pane and frame and which is safe and easy to use.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the course of the ensuing description considered in conjunction with the attached drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of the tool of the present invention in use in the removal of the glass from the ventilating section of a mot-or vehicle window.
Figure 2 is a view, on an enlarged scale, taken along the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an elevational view of the tool of the present invention.
Figure 4 is a view taken along the line 4-4 of Figure 5.
Figure 5 is a plan view of the tool of the present invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, numeral 1 designates a frame consisting of a pair of arms 2 and 3 arranged in parallel, spaced relation and an end piece 4 connecting one of the ends of the arms 2 and 3. The arms 2 and 3 are provided with reinforcing ribs 24. A pair of plates 5 and 6 are arranged in confronting, face-to-face, spaced relation between the arms 2 and 3 adjacent their other ends and each plate has a gripping surface 7 on the confronting face. The plate 5 is fixedly secured to the arm 2 by means of the screw 25. The plate 6 is connected to the arm 3 for movement toward and away from the plate 5 by means of a wing bolt 8 which is threaded through a collar 9 and the arm 3 carries the plate 6 swivelly upon an enlargement 10 on the end of the bolt 8 which projects between the arms 2 and 3.
A screw 11 extends longitudinally between the arms 2 and 3 and is rotatably supported in the end piece 4 and connected thereto for backward and forward longitudinal movement, one end 12 being inwardly of the end piece 4- and the other end 13 being exteriorly of the end piece 4. Specifically the end piece 4 has an aperture which is internally threaded to engage the external threading of the screw 11. The button 17 consists of a base portion 19 and a reduced facing portion 20, forming an annular shoulder 21 upon the edge of the button 17 conformably sized to engage the edge of a channel frame 22 of the ventilating section of a motor vehicle window on either side of a window pane 23 extending into the channel of the frame 22, Figure 5.
To use the tool of the present invention to remove a pane of glass from the ventilating section of a motor vehicle window, the tool is placed astride of the window section with the plates 5 and 6 adjacent opposite sides of the window pane 23 at a location appropriate for the application of the removing force to the pane, with the buttons 17 resting upon opposite sides of the pane adjacent to and inwardly of a side of the window frame 22 substantially opposite the open side thereof and the housing 16 exteriorly of said side of the frame 22, as shown in Figure l. The wing bolt 8 is then tightened until the gripping surfaces 7 of the plates 5 and 6 firmly engage the pane 23 therebetween, as shown in Figure 2. The screw 11 is next turned to draw the housing 16 away from the adjacent side of the window frame 22 until the shoulders 21 of the buttons 17 engage the edges of the window frame 22, as shown in Figure 5, anchoring the housing 16 and the screw 11 against further movement away from the frame 22. When the screw 11 is now turned further in the same direction, the tool frame 1 moves with respect to the anchored housing 16 so as to move the plates 5 and 6 away from the side of the frame 22, to which the housing 16 is anchored, drawing the pane 23 with them and sliding it out of the channels of the frame 22. It is obvious that the tool may be moved from place to place upon the window section and that the amount of movement imparted to the pane at any one point may be closely controlled by means of the screw 11. Thus a pane which resists immediate removal may be loosened at various points before the final force required to remove it from the frame is applied.
When a pane is to be inserted into the frame the tool is positioned and used in a manner similar to that just described except that the abutment 26 is placed against the closed exterior edge of the frame 22 and the screw 11 is turned in the opposite direction to bring the plates 5 and 6 toward the housing 16 and move the pane 23 into its appropriate place in the channels of the frame 22.
What is claimed is:
A tool for replacing a pane of glass in a channel frame open at one side comprising a frame including a pair of arms arranged in parallel spaced relation and an end piece connecting one of the ends of said arms, a pair of plates arranged in confronting face to face spaced relation between said arms adjacent the other ends thereof and each having a gripping surface on the confronting face, one of siad plates being fixedly secured to one of said arms and the other of said plates being connected to the other of said arms for movement toward and away from said one plate, a guide piece extending transversely between said 3 arms inwardly of and spaced from said end piece and fixedly secured to said arms, a screw extending longitudinally between said arms and threadedly engaged in said guide and end pieces and having one end inwardly of said guide piece and having the other end exteriorly of said end piece, a housing movably connected to said one end of said screw, a pair of buttons arranged in face to face spaced relation between said arms intermediate said housing and said plates, each of said buttons embodying a base portion and a reduced facing portion forming an annular shoulder upon the edge of the button conformably sized to engage the edge of a channel frame, a resilient spring arm extending between said housing and each of said buttons and having one end fixed to the base portion of one 4 of said buttons and having the other end connected to said housing, and an abutment between and spaced from said resilient spring arm and projecting longitudinally from said housing to engage the exterior of a channel 5 frame.
