1 Claim.
This invention relates to tools of the wheel puller type wherein screw actuated clamping elements are slidably mounted in a frame, and in particular this invention relates to a tool having parallel side beams with screw actuated clamping elements slidably mounted in the beams and with a clamp pivotally mounted between the ends of the beams opposite to the ends in which the screw for operating the clamp is positioned.
The purpose of this invention to provide a tool for readily removing and replacing the triangular shaped glass in similarly shaped frames of motor vehicle door ventilators.
Because of the odd shape of the glass and frames therefor of motor vehicle door ventilators it is diflicult to grip the glass when withdrawing the glass from the frame and it is also difiicult to hold. the glass as it is forced into the frame. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates a tool having side members positioned to be placed over a glass and frame of a motor vehicle door ventilator with a clamp for mounting the side beams on the frame of the ventilator, with clamping elements slidably mounted in the beams for gripping the glass, and with a screw for actuating the glass gripping elements.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide means for forming a pulling and pushing tool whereby glass panels may be removed from and inserted in triangular shaped frames without danger of breaking the glass or cutting the hands.
Another object of the invention is to provide a motor vehicle door ventilator glass extractor and inserter that is adjustable to accommodate ventilators of different designs and sizes.
A further object of the invention is to provide a glass extracting and inserting device for motor vehicle door ventilators which is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies a pair of side beams having glass gripping elements of the vacuum cup type positioned between the beams with means for adjusting the tension on the gripping elements, means for actuating the gripping elements, and a clamp for retaining the side beams in position upon the frame as the glass is withdrawn or replaced.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view illustrating the position of the tool on a motor vehicle door ventilator frame.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the tool as shown in Figure 1 with the ventilator omitted.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section through the tool taken on line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a sectional plan through the tool taken on line 4-4 of Figure 1 with the ventilator omitted.
Figure 5 is a cross section through the tool taken on line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Figure 6 is a detail showing a section through the clamping element pivotally mounted between the ends of the beams.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the motor vehicle door ventilator glass extracting and removing tool of this invention is formed with side beams H) and H with split clamping elements 52 and it between thebeams and positioned at one end of the tool, a screw i d, and with clamping jaws or plates l5 and It.
In the design shown the beams Hi and H are channel shaped in cross section and the screw I d which is provided with a handle H is threaded in a block or bearing 58 secured between the ends of the beams by thumb nuts l9 and 29 on threaded studszi and 22, extended from the block it.
The inner end of the screw I4 is provided with a head 23 that is positioned in a socket or recess 2:! in a traveling block 25 that is secured in sockets 2t and 2? in the ends of the jaws i5 and I5, respectively. The socket 26 is formed by extending fingers 23 and 25, as shown in Figure 1 and the socket 2'! is formed by extending fingers 36 and 3 I, as shown in Figure 3.
The inner faces of the gripping jaws l5 and it are provided with lining strips 32 and 33, respectively which are formed of rubber or other suitable resilient material and the inner faces of the strips or liners 32 and 33 are provided with recesses 3 5 and 35 that form vacuum cups to facilitate gripping the side surfaces of a glass panel 35 of a ventilator frame 31, as shown in Figure 1.
The tool is mounted on the frame of the ventilator by a clamp including the gripping jaws l2 and it which are pivotally mounted on a bolt 42 in the ends of the beams and the bolt is provided with a thumb nut 43. The gripping elements 12 and i3 are carried on the ends of bars 44 and 45 and studs 6 and t! extend from the bar as through openings in the bar 44, in which they are held by thumb nuts 48 and 49.
The traveling block 25 is provided with lugs 59 and that are slidaoly mounted in slots 52 and 53, respectively, in the webs of the beams ii! and l I and the lugs are secured in position by screws 54 and 55 with washers 56 and 5'! under the heads thereof.
The screws are threaded into the lugs 50 and 5! respectively.
With the parts arranged in this manner a ventilator from which it is desired to remove the glass panel is positioned between the beams it and i l with the frame of the Ventilator secured between the jaws i2 and i3 and with the glass panel gripped between the jaws l5 and it. With the jaws I5 and i6 securely clamped against the surfaces of the glass panel by the screws 38 and 3d the screw i5 is rotated in a counterclockwise direction whereby the gripping jaws i5 and iii withdraw the glass panel from the frame. A new panel is inserted in the frame in the same manner with the screw it rotated in a clockwise direction.
It will be understood that modifications may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
A tool for removing and inserting a ventilator glass, comprising a pair of side beams of channel shaped cross section, a bearing secured between the ends of said beams, a screw member arranged in threaded engagement with said bearing, a handle mounted on the outer end of said screw member, a head arranged on the inner end of said screw member, a pair of opposed jaws interposed between said pair of beams, fingers extending from said jaws and defining sockets, a movable blocl; secured in said sockets and provided with a recess for receiving the head on said screw member, said beams being provided with inner slots, lugs on said block slidably engaging said slots, lining strips of resilient material positioned on the inner surfaces of said jaws and provided with a plurality of recesses providing vacuum cups for engagement with the side surfaces of the ventilator glass, thumb screws extending through said beams for urging said gripping jaws against the side surfaces of the ventilator glass, a clamp including a pair of opposed bars positioned between said beams at the opposite end from the bearing, and gripping jaws on the inner ends of said bars.
