1 Claim. (Cl. 38-90) This invention relates to spacers for safety razors and more especially to a device for concomitantly utilizing two cutting blades in a razor.
Attempts have heretofore been made to utilize two blades simultaneously in a safety razor for the purpose of attaining dual cutting edges but such constructions have been unsatisfactory because of lack of proper relation of the cutting edges of the blades with respect to other components of the blade holder. Prior constructions embodying two blades have not been successful because the positioning of the blades has been such as to preclude effective simultaneous use of two cutting edges during shaving operations. In such constructions one only of the cutting edges performs substantially all of the severing and the other is rendered ineffective by reason of improper positioning.
An object of the present invention embraces a safety razor embodying a pair of blades arranged in juxtaposed but spaced relation whereby the cutting edges of both blades are operative to give a close shave with one shaving operation.
Another object of the invention is the provision of spacing means for holding the blades in proper relation where by the second blade is configured so that the adjacent cutting edges and the guard of the razor construction lie substantially in a single plane.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a spacer plate or member adapted to be disposed between two cutting blades in a razor construction wherein the spacer is configurated to impart a curved shape to the second blade whereby the cutting edges of the second blade are brought into proper shaving relation with the cutting edges of the first blade.
Another object of the invention is to provide a member or spacer adapted to be disposed between two blades in a safety razor, the spacer being of a character which may be economically manufactured and which may be utilized in safety razors of conventional construction.
Further objects and advantages are within the scope of this invention such as relate to the arrangement, operation and function of the related elements of the structure, to various details of construction and to combinations of parts, elements per se, and to economies of manufacture and numerous other features as will be apparent from a consideration of the specification and drawing of a form of the invention, which may be preferred, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a safety razor embodying the invention, the blade clamping means being shown in open position;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the arrangement shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a plan view of the blade spacing means of the invention; 7

Figure 6 is a greatly enlarged fragmentary sectional view illustrating the relationship of the guard and cutting edges of the blades.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the razor construction is inclusive of a holder 10 to which is secured a combined guard member and blade support 12. The member 12 is formed with flange portions 14 at its lateral edge zonesproviding guards for the adjacent cutting blade. The member 12 is engaged by a first cutting blade 20 which has central openings to accommodate a projection 22 which centers the blade 20 with respect to the guard member 12. r
A spacer or spacing member 25 is fitted over the projection 22 and engages the upper surface of the first blade 20. A second blade 27 substantially identical with the blade 20 is received on the projection 22. The arrangement of dual blades 20 and 27 and spacer 25 is shown in Figure l as they are initially assembled on the razor guard.
The razor construction includes two parallel clamping plates 30 which are pivotally supported upon pivot pins or shafts 33 carried by transverse members 28 which are secured to the ends of the longitudinal projection 22. Connected to the central zone of the projection 22 is a threaded member 35 disposed within the hollow handle 10 and equipped with a knurled kob or grip portion 37. By rotating the member 35 and knob 37 relative to the handle 10, the bar or projection 22 and transverse members 28 move downwardly and cam surfaces (not shown) formed on the guard 12 influence or control the blade clamping plates 30 to be swung to closed or blade clamping position shown in Figure 5.
The spacer or blade spacing member 25 disposed between blades 20 and 27 is of configuration to cause the blade 27 to be flexed and curved so as to bring the cutting edges 40 and 41 of blades 20 and 27 to a predetermined position with respect to the skin engaging por- The spacer 25 may be made of suitable material preferably having nonrusting characteristics such as aluminum, brass or the like, and is normally shaped with a curved configuration or shape designated 44 terminating at its edge zones in outwardly and upwardly extending ridge portions or flanges 46. As best shown in Fig. 3, the edge zones do not extend along the full length of the body of the spacer.
The flanges or ridges 46 engage the second blade 27 when the guard plates 30 are drawn or moved into blade clamping position to effect a fiexure of the edge zones of the uppermost blade 27 so that the cutting edges 40 and 41 of the blades 20 and 27 and the exterior surface zones 16 of the guard 12 lie in substantially the same plane as indicated by the plane A-A shown in Figure 6. It should be noted in Figures 5 and 6, with the blades in assembled position and the clamping plates 30 drawn into blade clamping position, that the cutting edges 48 and 41 of the respective blades 20 and 27 are spaced so as to provide for passage of hair between the blades and to assure that the cutting edges at adjacent edge zones of the blades will be equally effective during shaving operations.
The spacer or shim member 25 is formed with a longitudinal central opening 49 so that the spacer may be received upon the projection 22 of the holder 10 to properly locate or position the spacer 25 with the flange portions 46 parallel with the cutting edges 40 and 41 of the cutting blades 20 and 27.
The clamping plates 30 have downwardly curved edge zones 48 which engage the uppermost blade 27. It is apparent that, within the scope. of the invention, modifications and different arrangements may be made other than is herein disclosed, and the present disclosure is illustrative merely, the invention comprehending all variations thereof.
I claim:
As a new article of manufacture, a spacer of sheet material of uniform thickness for use with plural razor blades of a safety razor comprising a thin body, said body being narrower than said blades and curved, the body of said spacer having single convex and concave outer and inner surfaces respectively, said body having longitudinal edge zones, the longitudinal edge zones of said spacer being permanently bent upwardly in the direction of convexity of the outer surface of said body to present a continuous line of support for said razor blades, the length of said edge zones being less than the overall length of said body.
