2 Claims. (01. 30-50) This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in safety razor constructions and has more particular reference to a safety razor of a modern Gillette type, the functioning of which is rendered more efficient and made superior by Way of a second blade and properly constructed special adapter means therefor.
More specifically, the invention has to do with a safety razor wherein two, instead of one, deub-le edged blades are embodied and so associated with each other and the holder means that the user is assured .of a keen cutting, fast and cleanshaven result.
Briefly summarized, the preferred embodiment of the invention has to do with novel structural adapter means which is more inthe nature of an attachment in that it may be attached to a commonly constructed Gillette razor without requiring any alterations in the stock construction and without materially increasing the manufacturing cost or the sale price, insures even better results than are now satisfactoritly obtained with currently used constructions.
In carrying out a preferred embodiment of the invention, two duplicate flexible double-edged conventional safety razor blades are mounted in overlapping relation, the two blades being slightly spaced apart by an intervening spacer, the spacer being permanently and hingedly attached to the frame of the razor head construction through the medium of simple slotted bracket means.
Considered from another equally important structural point of view, the invention has to do with a simple attachment which is characterized by a slotted, substantially L-shaped attaching bracket and an adapter plate which is attached at one end to the bracket, said plate resembling the general appearance of a double-edge safety razor blade and having a centrally slotted portion and. being provided along its longitudinal edges with nodule-like bosses to assist in effectively separating the complemental blades.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying sheet of illustrative drawings.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, wherein like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the views:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a safety razor constructed in accordance with the principles of the present invention and Showing the manner in which the same is improved and herein used.
Gillette razor shown is characterized, as is cus- Figure 2 is a fragmentary view in section and elevation showing the details of construction somewhat more clearly.
Figure 3 is a vertical section and elevation taken approximately on the irregular vertical line 3-3 of Figure 2, looking in the direction of the arrows. v
Figure 4 is a top plan view with the upper or outer razor blad removed and exposing the adapter and spacer plate, one of the important features of the invention. I
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the complete attachment.
Referring now to the drawings by way of reference numerals, and especially to Figure 3, the
tomary, by a head having a generally Well known type of frame 6 to which component portions of the openable and closable hingedly mounted clamping plates 8 and 10 are connected. The usual guard I2 is attached to the handle means l4 and the central divider rib l6 permits the customary double edged, flexible safety razor blade I8 to be applied and used in the now wellknown fashion. In other words, so far the detailed description has covered what may be broadly referred to as a well known type of Gillette safety razor construction.
Now it may not be new to use two blades instead of one, and even to use two double edged blades in a safety razor holder. It may be likewise old to space the blades apart. In these circumstances, and instead of asserting claims to the combination of the holder with the two blades and spacing means, the invention will be directed to the attachment means of Figure 5 which makes it possible to bring about the double blade, quick cutting association depicted in Figure 3.
With reference now to the attachment means, this is made up of two principal parts; namely, an attaching bracket 20 and an auxiliary or extra razor blade adapter plate 22 cooperable with the bracket. The bracket is essentially L-shaped and includes a so-called short limb 24 with a flange 26 which is applied and welded to the underneath portion of one of the end members of the frame 6 as shown in Figure 2. This portion 24 extends outwardly beyond the complemental end member 28 where the longer limb extends vertically in spaced parallelism to said member, as at 30. This longer limb is provided with spaced parallel, vertically elongated slots 3232. These slots serve to accommodate coacting arm portions 34-44 of a substantially U-shaped bridling oke 36. The latter is of U-shaped. form and the arms are connected with an extension 38 on one end of the adapter plate 22. The plate proper is denoted by the numeral l and it is of general rectangular form and there is a central slot 42 therein and another reduced extension 44 at the opposite end. The slot obviously fits over the usual divider I6, as shown in Figure 3. The second blade, incidentally, is denoted by the numeral 46 and it, of course, corresponds to the other blade and when the two blades are used in unison the adapter plate is interposed between the blades and serves as a spacer. So that the spacer may be maintained in thin proportions and may be flexible, the gauge thereof is increased slightly by way of nodule-like bosses 46 along one edge and 48 along the other edge. It follows, therefore, that by fixing the attachment bracket in the position best shown, perhaps, in Figure 2, the adjustable thin, flexible, spacing and adapter plate 22 Ls constantly available for use in the manner desired by the user. That is to say, the slotted adapter plate may be fitted over the divider bar l6 after the first blade 18 has been applied to assume its usual shaving position. Now the plate 22 is superimposed atop the blade l8 and this provides a satisfactory base or foundation for the second blade which may be applied and used in the manner shown in Figure 3. The clamping plates 8 and [0 may be tightened up to insure corresponding flexing of the three components I8, 22 and 46. If desired, the second blade need not be used and the presence of the spacer adapter 22 will not interfere with the operation of the single double-edged blade. In fact, it is within the purview of the invention to attach the adapter 22 to the bracket 20 in such a way that the adapter could be swung clear out of the perimeter limits of the head structure so that it need not necessarily be included in and as a part of the head structure when the latter is in shaving use.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it is believed that a clear understanding of the de- 4 vice will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
Minor changes in shape, size, materials and arrangement of parts may be resorted to in actual practice without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. An attachment for the head of a safety razor construction of the class described comprising a substantially L-shaped bracket embodying a short arm and a long arm, said long arm being provided with slot means. said short arm being provided with a flange for attachment to the frame part of said head. and a flexible adapter plate provided at one end with a yok attached to said slotted arm.
2. An attachment for the head of a safety razor construction of the class described comprising a substantially L-shaped bracket embodying a short arm and a long arm, said long arm being provided with slot means, said short arm being provided with a flange for attachment to the frame part of said head, and a flexible adapter plate provided at one end with a yoke attached to said slotted arm, said plate being of general rectangular form having a keying slot and being provided along opposite longitudinal edge with rows of indentations providing bosses.
