3 Claims. (Cl. 131-194) This invention relates to improvements in smoking pipe construction whereby simplicity, economy and durability are achieved, along with efficiency in operation and pleasing appearance.

The object of this invention is to provide a briar pipe construction which lends itself to the economical use of expensive but desirable woods for the bowl portion, and 1n which a light metallic straight tubular stem of high heat dissipation qualities joins the bowl with a simple tip of suitable material through sliding fit joints for easy disassembly and cleaning.

A further object is to make said tubular stem of Sylphon form to provide increased cooling surface and volume as well as more flexibility to prevent breakage when the pipe is dropped or the stem is accidentally bent.

A further object is to provide the above Sylphon tube construction with straight sleeve ends for sliding fit over the linner end of the tip and a short stub stem on the A further object is to provide this stub stem on the bowl with a small bore at a level above the bottom of the bowl depression to form a pocket therein for any liquid residue during smoking.

A further object is to use an eccentric Sylphon constructio-n for the stem wherein the large and small diameters of the Wall sections are offset to form a substantially straight bottom wall to which all the sections are tangent, whereby cleaning is facilitated.

Other and more specific objects will appear in the following detailed description of some forms of construction based on this invention as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.

In the form illustrated, the bowl 36 may be made conservatively from expensive material, because it has a short stem stub portion and may therefore be carved out of a smaller blank piece.

The tubular stem may be made somewhat flexible by making it in the form of an accordion or Sylphon type construction 29' which will provide ample cooling surface. The tube may be of large diameter to provide a large volume cooling chamber 39' for intercepting a 2,864,382 Patented Dec. 16, 1958 municating at its outer end with the cooling chamber 39.

The eccentric Sylphon type of stem 29' shown more clearly in Figs. 2 and 3 is made so that the alternate narrow and wide sections 40 and 41, respectively, of the tube are offset to bring them into tangency at the bottom with a continuous substantially fiat bottom wall 42 of the cooling chamber 39, rendering it much easier to clean.

The cooling chamber 39' also serves as a depository or catch-all for any liquid condensation or dirt carried over from the bowl, and prevents unpleasant juices reaching the smokers mouth in the event they should be carried through the passage 37.

In order to prevent particles of soot or other dirt being carried through the cooling chamber, a loose filter material 43 may be used to substantially fill the chamber space.

The attributes of the cooling fin constructions apply equally to this corrugated Sylphon construction, because lightness of construction is similarly attainable, with the attendant conservation of materials and limited flexibility desired.

Many other obvious modifications in the form and detail construction of these pipes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of this invention, as defined in the appended claims.

What is claimed is:

1. A smoking pipe comprising a wood bowl having a short stem stub portion, a stem tip, and a light tubular metallic stem with limited flexibility, slidably fitted at its ends to said tip and said stub portion and having large heat dissipating surfaces for cooling gases passing through said stem, said stem being composed of a Sylphon type tube construction of alternate wide and narrow transverse sections and having sleeve end portions for sliding over a short stub on said bowl and an inner end of the tip respectively, the alternate narrow and wide sections of said Sylphon type construction being axially offset to make them all tangent to a substantially continuous flat bottom in said construction, whereby any deposits accumulated on said bottom may be readily removed.

2. A pipe as defined in claim 1, and a filter material substantially filling said Sylphon tube.

3. A pipe as defined in claim 2, said filter material being a replaceable cylindrical wad of a diameter substantially the same as that of the narrow sections of said Sylphon tube.
