MORTIS|NG-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,016, dated October 2, 1883. Application filed July 25,1883. (No model.)
1'0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, I. W. JOHNSON, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at New Richmond, in the county of St. CroiX and State of WViseonsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mortising-Machines;
and I do declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a plan view. Fig. 2 is a vertical section. Fig. 3 is a crosssection, and Fig. 4 is a detail view.
This invention has relation to mortising machines; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafterfully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims appended.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, a a designate the bed-rails of the frame of the machine, which are mounted on rollers b, and are mortised through laterally near each end, at c, to receive the graduated ends of the cross-rails d and e, on which they are laterally adjustable, being held to their adjustments by set-screws f, passing down through them into the graduated ends of the cross-rails d c. This lateral adjustment of the bed-frame is provided in order that the ma chine may be fitted to timbers of different widths, hooked clamp-rods 9, having thumbnuts at their upper ends, passing through ver' tical apertures g in the bed-rails a a, being provided for clamping the machine in place upon the timber. Projecting arms h", extending parallel with the graduated portions of the crossrails d and e, are secured in the inner ends of the lateral mortises c by pins 0', driven down through the bed-rails into their inner ends; Their inner ends are provided with vertical apertures, which register with the apertures g in the bed-rails a a, and their outer ends are provided with vertical apertures 9 for the reception of the clamp-rods y when they are removed from the apertures g.

Set-screws Zare employed to hold the rails of the carrying-frame to their adjustments. A rack-bar, m, extends from the side of the carryingframe 0' into and through a guiderecess, a, in a vertical wall, 19, rising from the crossrail e, and engages a cog-wheel, p, having bearings in boxes on the top of the vertical wall 12 and working in the guide-recess a. This cog-wheel q is providedwith a crank-handle, q, by turning which the chiselcarrying frame 0 is moved back and forth on the bed-rails.
r designates a hinged fulcrum for the lever 1*, which is pivoted in the bifurcated upper end of the hinged fulcrum. The lower end of this fulcrum is also bifurcated to receive the eye of a screw 8, through which the connecting-pivot s is passed to form the hinge. This screw 3 is driven into the bed-rail h of the carrying-frame 0, so that by unscrewing it at any time the lever r r may be removed.

The chisel w works in the gujdetube a when mortises are being cut, and either end mortises or side mortises may be cut in the timber by turning the chisel on its screw, first withdrawing it from the guide-tube.

This device is to be used in preparing boxing, at which time the plate t should be removed from the machine. The clamp-rods nearest this block should be removed and placed in the vertical apertures g of the projecting arms h, and the chisel should be adjusted on the lever r, so that it can be worked in the rectangular guide-tube 2, when the machine may be clamped on the board and the recesses cut. the block 2 should be removed.
A full-sized machine of this construction is only twenty-five inches long, and as all of its parts are held together by set-screws, it may be readily and quickly taken apart and packed in an ordinary tool-ehest'when not in use, or
when it is desired to transport it.
