UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELBERT J. CLARK, OF WINNEBAGO, ILLINOIS.
PAPER-CUTTING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 261,676, dated July 25, 1882.
Application filed April 7, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELBERT J. CLARK, of
Winnebago, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Cutting Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description oftheinventiomwhich will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a plan or top view of the machine. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same through the knife or cutter and presser-bar, as indicated by the broken line marked a: m in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar section through the bedplate, with its presser-bar and one of the ti ghtenin g-screws, as indicated by the broken line markedy y in Fig. 1; and Fig. 4is a per spective view of the knife or cutter.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to machines or apparatus for cutting or trimming paper, books, magazines, &c.; and it consists in the construction of a simple and inexpensive apparatus of that class which is particularly adapted for office and family use, or for the use of physi-* cians and druggists to out up paper for packin g or wrapping powders and other medicines. In the accompanying drawings, A represents the bed of the machine, which is simply a flat board of suitable size-saly about two-feet long by fourteen inches wide, more orless-the face of which has parallel lines a a half an inch apart, and a corresponding half-inch scale, b, marked on one edge. Near theleft-hand edge of the bed, about one inch from each end, is bored a hole, 0, through which worksa screw, D, having a lever handle or arm, 0?, at its upper end and a nut or button, 0, at its lower end. B is the presser-bar, which is of the same length as the bed A, and provided with a longitudinal slot or mortise, B. At each end of the bar are holes f, capped with iron nuts 9, through which the screws D Work, as shown more clearly in Fig.3 of the drawings, so that by turning the two screws bar B may be brought down against the bed or whatever is placed uponit with considerable pressure.
O is the knife or cutter, which has a rounded or oval cutting-edge and a shank, O, which is inserted through the middle of the handle E, to which it is nutted at h. The middle part of the handle, through which the knife is inserted, is mortised or recessed to form guides E E on each side of the knife, which slide upon opposite sides of thepresser-bar, the space between the guides being of a width corresponding to the width of the slotted bar B.
In using the machine the paper to be cut is placed upon the bed and gaged by means of the gage-lines a and scale 11, bar B having first been raised to permit the paper'to be placed under it. It is then screwed down, the knife is inserted through the vertical slot B in the presser-bar, and by taking hold of both ends of the handle E and drawing it forward and back over the paper this is speedily out with a smooth and even edge. The bed A is fastened to the edge of the bench or table T, upon which it is placed, by means of an ordinary screw-clamp, F, or other suitable means.
This machine, it will be seen,is exceedingly simple and inexpensive, is always handy and ready for use, and contains no complicated parts liable to break or get out of order.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The machine or apparatus for cutting and trimming paper herein shown and described, the same consistingot' the graduated bed A, having holes 0 0, screws D l), slotted presserbar B, and cutter G, mounted in a handle, E, having parallel guides E E, the whole constructed and combined substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein shown and. set forth.
In-testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses. v
. ELBERT J. CLARK.
