Description

' (No Model.)
J. J. WHEAT.
SEWING MACHINE. TABLE AND COVER.
Patented Sept. 25, 1883.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JoHN J. WHEAT, E INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR To CHARLES LILLY, OF SAME PLACE.
SEWING-MACHINE TABLE AND CQVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 285,534, dated September 25, 1883.
' Application filed March .24, 1883. (X0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. WHEAT, of Indianapolis, Indiana, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Sewing-Machine Tables and Covers, of which the following is a description, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters indicate like parts.
My invention will be readily understood from the following description.
Figure 1 is a horizontal section of my de vice, in which T is the table-top on which the machine rests. Hinged to this by an ordinary flat hinge, h, is the cover 0, on the inside of which is hinged an extra leaf, Lf, by hinges h h, and in this figure this leaf is shown when dropped down and hanging inside the cover.
Fig. 2 is a top View of the table and cover, with the leaf L f, turned up to close the opening in the bottom of the cover, thus making auniform fiat surface to the entire top as far as the hinge h, uponwhich theoperator may dispose the work.
Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the cover, showing the leaf in the same position as in Fig. 2,
closing the opening. Sp is a spring which the leaf back when it is let down.
The cover is hinged to the table, so as to allow the two to overlap some distance, and by this means the table provides all requisite support for the cover when the latter is thrown back, and no under brace or support is necessary.
YVhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the following:
1. The sewing-machine cover 0, provided with the interior leaf, Lf, and hinged to the table ,1 substantially midway between the machine-head and the end of the table, and recessed from such end to the hinge to allow the cover and table to overlap sufficiently to support the former in position when thrown open, substantially as described;
2. The sewing-machine cover 0, hinged to the table 'I, and overlapping the latter so far as to support the former in position when open, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 21st day of March, 1883.
JOHN J. IVHEAT. [L. s]
