CHESTER B. GROVER, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEWING-MACHINE COVERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,506, dated March 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHEsTER B. GROVER, of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Oover for Sewing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following, taken in connection with the drawing which accompanies and forms part of this specification, is a description of my invention sufficient to enable those skilled in the art to practice it.
My invention relates to the construction of covers for that class of sewing-machines in which hinged covers may be used, said covers being made in halves, mounted on vertical hinges, and closing together to cover, protect, and conceal the upper part of the sewingmachine, the halves separating and swin gin g horizontally outward to disclose the sewing-machine when it is to be operated.
These hin ged half-covers have heretofore been made-to swing only ninety degrees, this bringin g them into line with the rear ends back to back; but in this position they are oftentimes very much in the way of the desirable access to the whole machine, the adjacent ends of the halves preventing them from being turned back any further.
In my invention I use the two hinged covers; but, instead of bringing them together or at the center of the case, I hinge them to the opposite vertical edges of a stationary back piece, which piece forms a part of the cover or case, and has such width that each half can swing around one hundred and eighty degrees from its closed-up position, the two halves being thus brought directly opposite to their first position and entirely behind the machine. It is in this construction that the invention consists. v
The drawing shows atA and B, in plan and rear-end view, a sewing-machine top, case, or cover embodying my invention.
a denotes the table, upon which sets the sewing-machine work-supporting table, with the mechanism supported thereupon. b c are the two half-covers, each of which may contain drawers and other receptacles for spools of thread, needles, 860. The end piece d of each halfis made narrower than the width of the cover half, and at its inner edge 0 each piece d is hinged to a wide center-piece, f, as seen at g. r
When the cover is open the two halves may be swung around one hundred and eighty degrees, thereby bringing them into position, shown at A by dotted lines. This entirely removes the covers from the sides of the sewing-machine plate, and leaves the interior of each open for access thereto.
I claim- The improved sewing-machine cover, consisting of the two halves b c, hinged to the stationary rear piece f, as seen at 9, so that the halves can be swung to the rear, substantially as shown and described.
