CLASP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 284,943, dated September 11, 1883. Application filed July 30, 1853. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it knownv that I, F. BARTON BROWN, of Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Clasps, of which the following description, in connection with the vaccompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention is an improvement upon the clasp described in United Stateslatent No. 202,924, granted to me April 30, 187 8, to which reference may be had, 'the' said clasp being especially intended for use in connection with garment-supporters. In the clasp represented in 'the said patent the rear end of the pivoted jaw, which is acted on and pressed inward by the wearer of the clasp to Open it, normally rstands so far out from the rigid or base jaw of the clasp as to leave a space between the rear end of the pivoted jaw and the base-j aw, into which the clothing enters and becomes caught. To obviate this difficulty I have bent inwardly the rear end of the pivoted jaw of the clasp, and have provided the stationary jaw of the clasp with an opening, into which the said bent rear end may enter when the clasp is opened, and at the rear end of the stationary jaw of the clasp I have bent a portion thereof upward from its back side, to form tubes or eyes for the reception of the cords to which the clasp is attached, and the said tubes or eyes are so located and shaped as to project beyond the eX- tremity of the rear end of the pivoted jaw when the same is closed by the action of the spring ofthe clasp, thus effectually shielding the rear end of the pivoted jaw and preventing the catching of anything thereunder. The stationary jaw and the tubes or eyes which act asa fender for the rear end of the pivoted j aw are made from a blank cut as a single piece from sheet metal.
My invention consists, essentially, in a clasp having a rigid or base \j aw provided with cord-receiving tubes or eyes,'vto act also as a fender, combined with a pivoted j aw, the rear end of which is bent inward, as will be described.
Figure l represents a blank suitable for the manufacture of the stationary jaw ofthe clasp. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of one of my im* 5o proved clasps, Fig. ,3, a longitudinal section thereof on the dotted line x x; and Fig. 4 is a cross-section of Fig. 3 on the line y y, looking in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 3.
The blank shown in Fig. l, from which the 5 5 rigid or base jaw eis made, has teeth a and projections a, with holes 2 for the reception of the pin b, a hole or opening, a2, for the reception of the inwardly-turned rear end, c2,
of the jaw d, pivoted on the pin b, and arms a, which are adapted to be bent over to form tubes or eyes c c, for the reception of the usual cords of a stocking or sleeve supporter. y The blank sh own in Fig. l is weakened in a measure by cutting from it the material to form the op ening a2, for the reception of the rear end of 'the jaw d, and to compensate for this the blank is made wider than in the said patent between the projections a', which are t0 be turned up to form ears for the pin b and the 7o tubes or eyes c, so that when the eyes are formed and the ears turned up the widened shank of the blank will be turned upor over,
as Shown at j'. 'The flanged part of the rigid or base jaw, by being turned-upward, as described, adds very materially to the strength andA durability of the said jaw. As shown in Fig. 3, it will be seen that the tubes or eyes c act as a fender for the rear end of the pivoted jaw d, so that clothing, Src., cannot get under 8O the 'said rear end and b etween it and the'rigid or base jaw. The spring h is as common to the said patent.
I claiml. In a clasp, the rigid or base jaw provided with the cord-receiving tubes c, combined with the pivoted movable jaw, having its rear end bent inward, as described, to be shielded by the cord-receiving tubes when the clasp is closed, Lsubstantially as described.
2. rIhe rigid or base jaw provided with an opening back of its ears, combined with the pivoted jaw, having its rear end bent inward toward the said rigid or base jaw, and adapted to enter the said Opening` when the clasp is opened, substantially as described.
3. In a clasp, the pivoted jaw, combined In testimony whereof Ihave signednlynmne with the rigid or base jaw provided with cordto this speeieation in the presence of two subreceiving tubes or eyes and ears, and strengthseribing Witnesses. ened in its shank between the said ears and v eyes by turning up or over the edges of the l Vitnesses:
met-a1 forming the rigid 0r base j aw, substan- I' tially as described.
