Description

UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
LORENZO D. MOTT, JR, OF MARSHALLTO\VN,-IOWA.
COMPOUND FOR PRESERVI NG WOO D AND METAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 284,653, dated September 11,1883,
Application filed July 14, 1883. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may] concern Be it known that I, LORENZO D. MoTT, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Marshalltown, in the county of Marshall and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compounds for Preserving WVood and Metal; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the class of compounds used for preserving wood and metal from the action of fire, water, and deleterious gases by rendering the same water-proof.
I The invention consists of the following ingredients, combined in about the proportions stated, to wit: gas-tar,.fifty (50) gallons; yellow ocher, ten (10) pounds; iron-clad mineral paint, ten (10) pounds sulphur, ten (10) pounds rock-salt, ten (10) pounds rosin, twentyfive pounds; The gas-tar is first heated over a slow fire for about two hours, by which 25 the gas is allowed to escape, and the tar boiled down one-quarter, thereby making it much thicker, after which the other ingredients are added and the whole thoroughly mixed, and heated for about forty-five 1ninutes,when
it is applied hot, with a brush, to a dry sur- 3o face. The rosin hardens the compound and prevents it from running. For sheet metal the salt should be left out, as it has a tendency in ashort time to rust the same.
Having thus fully described my invention, 3 5 what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described composition of matter for rendering wood and metal fire and water proof, consisting of gas-tar, yellow ocher, 4o
' sulphur, iron-clad mineral paint, and rosin,
either with or without the addition of salt, and in about the proportions specified.
In testimony whereof I aiiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LORENZO D. MOTT, JR.
