1 Claim. (Cl. 229-33) This invention relates to box construction and particularly to that class of folding boxes which are composed of paperboard or the like and are cut from a single blank of board-forming material.
The present invention has for its object to provide a folding box which may be readily set up for use at the time products are to be placed therein, so that prior to such usage, the blanks will be in fiat, compactly grouped state, occupying but a minimum of space during shipment and storage.
Another object is to provide a one-piece folding box which, when folded and set up for use, provides an outer frame composed of multiple thickness of the board material from which the box is formed, whereby to provide a frame of marked strength, rigidity and load-sustaining characteristics.
A further object is to provide a one-piece box of the character indicated in which the panel forming the top wall of the box terminates at its sides in downwardly foldingwebs which engage the inner surfaces of the side walls of the box to brace and reinforce the same, the webs, in turn, terminating in inwardly projecting, freely swinging wings which are adapted to engage products loosely placed in the box to hold the same against bunching, displacement or wrinkling when the box is handled.
A still further object of the invention is to simplify and improve the construction and arrangement of the component parts of the box.
With these and other ends in View which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing there has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.

Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken through the reinforced front wall construction of the box and disclosing the tying means therefor;
Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the box and taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 6 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view showing i a slightly modified form ofside wall construction for the box, disclosing an additional reinforcement therefor.
Corresponding parts in the several gures are denoted by like characters of reference.
The folding box of the present invention is formed from a single blank B of foldable sheet material, preferably paperboard. This blank is cut and scored to form generally a base section and a closure section each comprising a plurality of integrally joined panels, wherein is embodied a substantially rectangular bottom wall 1, a. correspondingly formed and dimensioned top wall 2, and relatively narrow, elongated, side walls 3, a back wall 4 and overlapping front walls 5 and 5a, the front wall 5 being carried by the bottom wall 1 and the other front wall 5a by the top wall 2. At this point I desire to have it understood, that the use of the words in the specification and claims such as top, bottom, front, back and side are employed merely for the purpose of facilitating a clear understanding of the form and arrangement of the box parts and not by way of limitation, since the quoted Words have been used herein primarily because of the positions of the box parts as illustrated in the drawings, and that if the box should be placed in other positions, such descriptive words are, for purposes of their instant usage, to be considered adequately descriptive.
The bottom wall 1 is foldably joined with the front and back walls 5 and 4 along the score or fold lines 6 and '7, while the side walls 3 are foldably joined with the bottom wall 1 by the score or fold lines 8. The side walls 3 are formed with front wall flaps or extensions 9 and are flexibly joined therewith by the score or fold lines indicated at 10, so that these extensions will fold in overlapping order against the front wall 5 when the box is set up for use. Also, the side walls 3, in alignment with the rear Wall 4, are formed with rear wall reinforcing flaps 11 which are free to fold about the score lines 12 to engage the rear wall 4 and reinforce its corner construction with the side walls 3.
The top wall 2 atthe sides thereof is formed with spaced parallel fold lines 13 and 14, dening between the side wall-reinforcing webs 15. Beyond the score lines the top wall is extended to provide merchandise holding and position-maintaining wings 16.
In folding the blank to form the set up, merchandisereceiving box, the side walls 3 are folded about the score lines 8 to assume an uptight position with respect to the horizontally positioned bottom Wall. The side wall aps 11 are folded inwardly about the score lines 12 and, likewise, the side wall extensions 9 are correspondingly folded about score lines 10. The rear wall 4 and front wall 5 are correspondingly folded about their score lines 7 and 6, respectively, to upright positions, as shown in Fig. 2. The top wall 2 is then inwardly folded about the'score line 17, `so that it will fold over the bottom wall 1. The webs 15 are correspondingly folded about the score lines 13, the wings 16 about the fold lines 14 and the front wall 5a about the fold line 18, thereby completing the folding of the blank.
With the blank so folded the contents 19 of the box are placed therein and the box is rendered secure and fastened by a tying cord or tape 20. The intermediate portion 21 of the cord is positioned on the inner surface of the front wall 5 and the two ends of the cord are then passed through eyes 22 formed in the wall 5, through registering eyes 23 formed in the front wall 5a of the top wall, through eyes 24 formed in the overlapping side wall extensions 9, the free ends of the cord being then tied and united by a slip knot, thereby holding the box in secure, assembled order.
