APPLICATOR FOR LIPSTICK Filed May 25, 1953 United States Patent 015cc 2,735,435 Patented Feb. 21, 1956 APPLICATOR FOR LIPSTICK Samuel S. Feinstein, Brooklyn, N. Y. Application May 25, 1953, Serial No. 357,776
7 Claims. (Cl. 13288.7)
The present invention is directed to an applicator for lipstick, more particularly to a device for applying lipstick to the lips.
Devices of this type have been proposed but because of certain inherent defects therein they have not come into common use. For instance, there has been proposed a relatively rigid container having surfaces shaped to conform with the shape of the lips, the container having a series of openings whereby lip rouge is forced through the openings onto the lips. These had a number of disadvantages in that one had to manipulate the container itself in order to cause the lip rouge to flow through the openings, making it practically impossible to apply the same to the lips uniformly or accurately. Also the device was not flexible in that the shape of the device could not be made to conform with the various shapes of lips, thereby defeating its intended purpose.
In another device of the prior art there was provided a box-like chamber having a long strip of paper therein, said strip carrying lip rouge and having a masking sheet of paper thereover with a cut-out portion of the shape of the lips. It was intended that said cut-out portion be placed at a corner of the container and the lips of the user placed over said corner. This had the disadvantage that it was practically impossible to press the lips sufiiciently onto the cut-out portion to definitely and uniformly transfer the lip rouge to he lips. Also in drawing the strip over the container, there was smearing, which rendered the container messy and also gave a fuzzy edge to the applied lip rouge.
The present invention is intended and adapted to overcome the difficulties and disadvantages inherent in prior devices of the type described, it being among the objects of the present invention to provide an applicator for lipstick or lip rouge which is simple in construction, which is compact and light in weight.
It is also among the objects of the present invention to provide a lipstick applicator which may be used without the necessity of a mirror and wherein the lip rouge may be applied accurately and quickly.
It is further among the objects of the present invention to provide a device of the character described which is useable for one or more applications and then discarded, and which is applicable to various sizes and shapes of lips.
It is still further among the objects of the invention to provide a device wherein the lip rouge is transferred to the lips by pressure of the fingers of the user without the danger of smearing of the lip rouge.
In practicing the present invention there is provided a relatively stiff but flexible thin sheet, usually in the form of a disk, which is partially folded along its centerline so as to constitute a pair of flaps at an angle to each other, the angle being roughly in the neighborhood of 90. Said disk has a pair of cut-out portions corresponding in size, shape and position to the upper and lower lips of the user. The disk is of impervious mate rial.
On the inner face or fold of the disk is secured a coarse mesh material which covers the lip openings. There is further provided a disk carrying on one face the lip rouge with the coated side facing the mesh and detached therefrom except at the fold.
The invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters indicate like parts, and in which Fig 1 is a perspective view of an applicator for lipstick or lip rouge, looking from the inside of the fold;
Fig. 2 is a-perspective view thereof, looking from the outside of said fold;
Fig. 3 is a transverse, cross-sectional view thereof taken along line 33 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of each of the three principal elements of the applicator, and
Fig. 5 is a view showing the method of application of lip rouge to the lips.
There is provided a disk 1 which is of any suitable material, having an outer face 2 which may be of metal foil or the like. It has a pair of openings 3 and 4 which are of the size and shape of the lips of the user. A disk 5 of a mesh fabric, usually a coarse mesh, is cemented onto the inner face of disk 1, thus covering the lip openings 3 and 4, as shown at 6.
A third disk 7 of impervious material has its inner face 8 coated or otherwise formed with a surface which will not allow lip rouge to penetrate through it. The outer face 9 of packing piece 7 is covered with a layer of lip rouge. Backing piece 7 is assembled with face 9 thereof adjacent to layer 5 and the latter is cemented to the inner face of disk 1. All three disks are bent along the centerline to an angle of about 45 and a strip 10 of a relatively rigid material such as metal or plastic, is inserted in the fold and is bent over the outside of disk 1, as shown at 11. Disk 1 and backing piece 7 are relatively rigid so as to hold their form, but are deformable under pressure of the fingers.
In the use of the applicator, it is taken in the fingers and one of the folds thereof applied to the upper lid, as shown in Fig. 4. Pressure is applied to face 8 of backing 7 by fingers 12 which rub gently across face 8, thus transferring the lip rouge to the lips accurately and uniformly, giving a sharp outline on the lip. Then similarly the fingers 12 are pressed upon the lower portion of face 8 so that contact is made by the opening 4 with the lower lip. The fingers are then rubbed gently across face 8 to transfer the lip rouge to the lower lip.
Although I have described the invention setting forth a single specific embodiment thereof, various changes in the details of construction may be made within the spirit of the invention. For instance, in some cases the mesh 5 may be of a fine quality or it may be made of extremely fine threads of any suitable textile material. The disk 1 and backing 7 may be made of metal, plastic, stilf paper, fabric, felt or the like. The disks need not be circular in outline but may be of any suitable shape. Strip 10 may be replaced by cement, staples or other holding means.
These and other changes in the details of construction may be made within the spirit of the invention, which is to be broadly construed and not to be limited except by the claims appended hereto.
