A WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD 0. NUGENT, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
MACHINE FOR BEVELING COLTERS, 80C.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 272,082, dated` February 13, 1883.
i Application filed August 4, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern t Be it known that I, RICHARDG. NUGENT, of "Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful lmprovement in Machines for Beveling the Edges of Golters and Analogons Articles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyingl drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to an improvement in machines f'or lieveling the edges of colters and analogous articles; and it consists in the features of construction and combination, substantially as hereinafter set forth.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of my specification, Figure lis a side elevation of my improvement in machines for beveling the edges of colters and analogous articles. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section; Fig. 8, a transverse section taken on the line yy.
In the accompanying drawings, Arepresents the frame of the machine, in the uprights B of which are adjustable blocks 0, in which are pivoted swivel-bearings D, for the shafts or axles'E F. The blocks U are susceptible l of 'adjustment in the uprights B through the medium of adjusting-screws G, and are held against theinner ends ofthe adjusting-screws Gr by means of spiral springs H, or other means placed on vertical pins I, the ends of Vwhich are`f1tted in recesses in the blocks G.
The axles or shafts` E F are provided with collars J; for preventing them from moving longitudinally.
On the shaft or axleF are secured Wheels a b, the wheel b meshing into wheelyc on the shaft E, and the Wheel a `meshing into wheel d on the shaft K,having a driving-pulley, e.
0n one end of the shaft F is a roller, L, having a beveled flan ge, f, which flan ge is adj usted with reference to the rear side of the roller M on the shaft E through the mediumof adjusting-screw g, said ange being employed for the purpose of preventing the tinnng77 of the periphery or cutting-edge of the colter or other article while forming the beveled edge thereon. l
The formation ot' the teeth of the gear- Wheels a b c d, for adapting the Wheels to the converging and varying positions that the shafts or axles E F may be in in adjusting the rolls L M to the different degrees of bevel del sired for the colter or other article, I leave to the skill and judgment of the mechanic.
The clamping mechanism N, for the blank O, is the same in construction and operation in every respect as that described in Letters Patent No. 248,053, granted me October 11, 1881, for improvement in machines for beveling plow-colters, to which reference is had; and the operation of the machine, as an entirety, will be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings and Without further description.
Having'thus described the nature, construction, and operation of my improvement, what I claim as of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The combination, with the roller L, provided with an annular flange,f, of the planefaced roller M, the shafts E and F, mounted in pivoted bearings D, and4 means, substantiall y as described, for effecting a longitudinal adjustment on the part of one of the shafts, these vsaid shafts being mounted so as to diverge toward their ends upon which the rollers are secured, substantiallyas described.
