The bearing block 44 is provided with an upwardly extending tongue portion 44a that passes through an elongated opening d in the top plate I4 of the housing H so that the bearing 44 can be moved back and forth longitudinally with respect to the housing H and carry the shaft 32 with it for adjustment purposes that will later be described.
The upper end of the bearing portion 45a is provided with a plurality of upwardly extending ribs or tooth like elements 46 that are snugly received between other ribbed or tooth like elements si that are integrally formed on the underside of an adjustment bar 48 that rests on and bears against the upper surface of the top plate IL! of the lions ing H.
The outer ends of the adjustment bar provided with elongated holes 49 and 5e throngwhich cap screws 5I and 52 and are threaded intthe top plate I4 of the housing H to rigidly bin. and hold the adjustment bar 48 and the bearing 4s and shaft 32 in longitudinal adjusted posi tions with respect to the housing H. The front end of the bearing 44 is made square and slid ably passes through a vertically positioned elonn gated opening IIa in the front wall .II of the housing H and is vertically movable for a short distance therein. Across the front end of the housing H and resting against the upper surface of the upper housing plate I4 is positioned a reinforcernent bar 53 that is rigidly bolted te the housing H by meansof bolts` 54 and 55 that pass through the upper housing plate I4 and the ends of the reinforcement bar 53 as shown. An justing screw 56 is threadedly passed through the reinforcing bar 53 and the upper plate I4 of the housing H so that the lower vend of the screv,Y 55 bears against the upper .sideA of the bearing block 44 so as to hold the bearing block 44 in vertically adjusted positions. The upper end of the screw 56 projects above the reinforcement bar 53 and is made square so that a crank wrench 55a may be placed thereon by which the screw may be turned for adjustment purposes as will readily be 4underu stood.
The outer end of the shaft 32 is slightly tapered and a round edged roller 51is tightly fitted thereon and a presser plate 5311s also positioned around the front end of the shaft 32, and a nut 53 is threaded on the outer end of the shaft 32 and bears against the presser plate 58 which in turn presses against the roller 51 to still more tightly press and hold the roller 51 on the tapered end of the shaft 32.
The shaft 32 is provided with an axial bore that extends inwardly from the front end of tl e shaft 32 and well past the rear end of theV ribbed bearing sleeve 42,v and laterally extending holes iii are drilled between the bearing ribs 43 and extend through the bearing sleeve 42 and the shaft and open into the bore ISB-of the shaft 32.
An oil receiving element B21, commonly known as a jerk oiler is threaded into the front end of the bore 6D in the shaft 32 whereby oil may be forced through the oiler62 into the bore $0 and through the lateral passages EI to lubricate the bearing as will readily be understood.
The machine is provided with a second roller carrying shaft 63,.the rear end of which is removably carried in a bearing block 64 that is made the same, and has the same characteristics and is mounted in the rear end plate I0 of the housing H and is positioned between the guide plates 34 and 35 the same as the bearing 33 and is positioned directly below the bearing 33 immediately in front of the lbearing 64 and rigidly mounted on shaft 63 is a second spur gear 35 that is in mesh with, and is the same diameter as the spur gear 40 on the shaft 32. The front end of the shaft 52 is provided with a bearing sleeve B6 that is pressed on the shaft 63. The bearing sleeve S3 is provided with outwardly extending and spaced apart annular rib portions 61 that are revolvably received in grooves in the bearing block 68, the outer portion of which is made square and is positioned in and is movable longitudinally in the lower portion of the aforementioned elongated opening I i c and bears on the front plate I I of the housing l-i.
The lower portion of the lower bearing block 68 is provided with a recess 69 therein in which is positioned a cam 1i! that engages the sides of the recess 69 for longitudinal movement of the bearing blocks 68. The cam 10 is preferably integrally formed on the shaft 1I the ends of which are journalled in the side walls II and I2 of the housing H. One end of the shaft 1I is provided with a long lever element 12, one end of which is keyed to the shaft 1I and the other end of which is formed into a handle formation 12a, the lever 12 being rockable along the outer face of the side wall I2 of the housing H.
The side wall I2 of the housing H is provided with an arcuate lock bar 13 that is spaced'away from the side wall I2 and is supported by the side wall I2, and passes over the lever 12. The lock bar 13 is provided with an arcuate slot 14 therein that is centered about the center axis of the cam shaft 1I. The lever 12 is provided with a cap screw 15 that is threaded thereinto and passes through the arcuate slot 14 so that the head of the screw 'I5 will bear against the lock bar 13 to pull and bind the lever 12 against the lock bar 13 in any of its adjusted positions.
The front bearing blocks 44 and 68 are slidably positioned between a pair vof guide elements 16 and 11 that are welded to or integrally formed on the inside of the front end Wall II and on opposite sides of the elongated opening I Ia.
The front end of the lower shaft 63 is tapered and a round edged rollerv element 18, which is a duplicate of the roller 51 is tightly tted on the taper of the shaft 63, and a presser plate 19 which is a duplicate of the presser plate 58 is also positioned on the outer end of the shaft 63 and bears against the roller 18, and a nut is threaded on the outer end of the shaft 63 and bears against the roller 18 and a nut 80 is threaded on the outer end of the shaft 63 and bears against the presser plate 19 which in turn presses against the roller 18 to effect a further tightening of the roller on the tapered end of the shaft 63. The rear end of the shaft 63 is provided with a sprocket wheel 8l that is rigidly mounted thereon and is in alignment with the sprocket wheel v21 that is rigidly mounted on the drive shaft 24.
The machine is provided with a chain 82 that passes around and engages both sprocket wheels 21 and 8I for driving purposes as will be readily understood.
The lower central portion of the front end wall II of the housing H is provided with a pair of outwardly extending ear like elements 83 and`84 that are rigidly attached to, preferably welded to. or integrally formed on the end plate I I.
The machine is provided with a work support holder rod 85 the rear end of which is provided with an ear like formation 86 that is positioned between the ear like elements 34 and B3 on the front wall ll of the housing E and is pivotally carried on a bolt :81 which passes through the ear like elements BB--B-l The work support rod 85 isprovided with a inverted T-shaped kbraclnaft 83 vthat has'a bore through the head thereof .and is slidably mounted on the work support holder rod k85. 'The other leg of the T bracket 88 is-provided with ya bore that is internally threaded and inpwhich is received the threaded lower .end of a worksupport rod 89. The upper end of the work support rodV 59is provided with a collar 9i) that is slidably carried thereon and which is stationable thereon by means of a set screw 9| that'is threaded through the collar and the inner end thereof will engage the work support rod 89 to rigidly bind and hold the collar 99 at any adjusted position up or down the work support rod 89. 3 Y A. j
The work support holder rod 85 is threaded to receive a wing nut 92 that is threaded thereon and bears against one end of the'liead of the inverted T-shaped bracket 88tomove the bracket t along its supporting rod 85 lfor adjustment purposes as will later be described. l
The head of the T-shaped bracket 8B is provided with an adjustment operating lever 93; one end of which is rigidly attached to, preferably integrally formed on the head of the T-shaped bracket 89, and the lever 93 extends sidewardlv, downwardly and forwardly from the T-shaped bracket 88 so that the bracket 88 and work supporting rod thereon may be rocked to adjusted positions, thereby, as will later be described.
Both side walls I2 and I3 of the housing I-I are provided with centrally positioned openings therethrough, such as shown at 94 that the operator of the machine can reach his hand into the interior of the housing H for any reason which he might deem necessary.
The lower shaft 63 is provided with a bore 95 lateral bores 96 through the shaft B3 and bearing sleeve 66 and between the ribs 51 to receive lubrication from an oiler 91 the same as described for the shaft 32 bearing sleeve 42 and oiler 62.
The machine would be driven by any suitable power unit that would drive V belts which would also engage and drive the V belt pulley 28 to drive the machine.
To use the machine the set screw 9| would be loosened and a disk 98 to be sharpened would be positioned on and around the work support shaft S9 and the disk 98 and collar 90 would be moved up or down the work support shaft 89 to such a point that the edge of the disk can be rocked toward and entered between the rollers 51 and 18 at the proper angle to be rolled between the rollers for sharpening purposes. The disk having thus been positioned, may be rocked toward or away from the rollers 51 and 18 by raising and lowering the outer end of the work support holder shaft t5 and the work support shaft 89 may be rocked sideways to or away from a line passing through the point of tangency of the rollers 51 and 18 and running longitudinally with the machine. VThis movement or adjustment may be accomplished by rockably moving the outer end of the lever 93 about the shaft 95, the object of this movement or adjustment will later be made obvious.
The disk having thus been mounted, the lever 12 may be rocked or swung whereupon the cam shaft and cam thereon will be rocked to move the front bearing block 63 longitudinally to adjust the alignment or disalignment of the rollers 51 and 18, whereupon the rod 85 may be rocked up- 6 wardly and the disk 98 will move inwardly between the rollers 51 and l with the 'edge ofthe disk a little past the point of Contact of ,the rollers 5l and 18 thereon.
The disk having thus been vplaced the screw 55 is screwed downwardly which in turn moves the upper bearing block All, the front end of the shaft 32 and roller 51 thereon downwardly to engage 'the disc 9B between-the two rollers which will produce very slight indentures therein, due to the pressure exerted by the rollers 51 and 18. The foregoing described movement and pressure therefrom having been achieved the cap screw 15 may be tightened and the lever 12 will be rigidly held in its adjusted position. 1
Now the power may be applied to the machine, whereupon the if belt pulley 23, shaft and sprocket wheel 2 thereon will be revolved so that the sprocket wheel V2'5" will drive the chain 82 which in turn drives the spl-rocket wheel t! which in turn revolves the shaft 53 and gear 55 which in turn drives the gear llt to revolve the shaft 32 whereupon the rollers 51 and 18 are revolved and they in turn feed the. diskr 53 therebetween and produce a circular indenture therearound, a slight distance from. the edge of the disk, and as the rollers 51 and 19 continue to revolve the disc is rolled therebetween and the lever e5 may be slightly raised, whereupon the disc supporting ele ment will be tipped slightly sideways which in turn will similarly tip the disc which will effect a spiral line of travel of the disc between the rollers and the disc will therefore eventually move outwardly until the rolling action of the rollers is directly on the edge of the disc, and as the disc travels in its movement the thickness of the disc where the rollers 51 and 18 contact the disc diminishes, therefore as the disc moves outwardly the rollers 51 and 'iii must be brought closer together until at the edge of the disc 53 the rollers 51 and i8 would substantially contact each other at which time the edge of the disc 58 will be rolled into an extremely sharp and hardened edge. ylhe bringing of the rollers 51 and 18 together may be accomplished by turnH ing the adjusting screw 55 to move the bearing block d downwardly whereupon the roller 5l would be similarly moved to approach or even engage the looser roller 18.
It may be desirable also in some cases to operate the rollers 51 and 18 slightly out of alignment with each other so as to maintain the original curvature of the disc 98 as it is being rolled. To accomplish this adjustment of the rollers 51 and 18 the cap screws 5l and 52 may be slightly loosened and the adjusting bar l may be slipped either forward or backward the desired distance, whereupon the upper bearing block 44 and shaft 32 will be similarly moved to effect the same movement of the upper roller 51 over the lower roller 13. The upper roller 51 having thus been adjusted, the cap screws 5l"and 52 may again be tightened to rigidly hold the adjustment that made as above described.
The alignment or disalignment of the rollers 51 and 18 may be adjusted to meet the desire of the operator of the machine during the progress of the rolling operation by rocking the lever 12 up or down, whereupon the shaft 'H and cam 1t thereon will be revolved and move the lower bearing block (i8, shaft $3 and roller 18 thereon longitudinally to place the roller 18 in the desired relationship to the upper roller 51.
While the machine as shown in the drawings and described in the foregoing specication is probably the preferred form of the machine, it is toV be understood that such modifications ci the machine may be employed as lie within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit and intention of the invention.
Now having fully shown and described my invention, what I claim is:
l.. In a disc sharpening device of the kind described, a supporting frame and a pair of roller carrying shafts, said shafts being revolvably carried in bearing blocks positioned at the ends of said shafts, said bearings being carried by said frame, a pair of rollers, said rollers being carried, one on adjacent ends of each of said shafts, and means for revolving said shafts, the bearing block adjacent one of said rollers being adjustable vertically, the bearing block adjacent the other of said rollers being adjustable longitudinally and means for carrying each f said shafts with their respective bearings as they are adjusted as aore said, the means for moving said shafts with their respective movable bearingr blocks being outwardly extending annular rib elements rigidly carried by their respective shaft, said bearing blocks having grooves therein to revolvably receive said ribs.
2. In a disc sharpening device of the kind derscrbed, a supporting frame and a pair of roiler carrying shafts, said shafts being revolvably carried in bearing blocks positioned at the ends of said shafts, said bearings being carried by said frame, a pair of rollers, said rollersbeing carried, one on adjacent ends of each of said shafts, and means for revolving said shafts, the bearing block adjacent one of said rollers being adjustable vertically, the bearing block adjacent the other oi said rollers being adjustable longitudinally and means for carrying each of said shafts With their respective bearings as they are adjusted as aforesaid, the means for moving said shafts with their respective movable bearing blocks being outwardly extending annular rib elements rigidly carried by their respective shaft, said bearing blocks having grooves therein to revolvably receive said ribs, and means for entering lubricating material through said shafts and between said ribs.
