Description

(N0 Modl G. T. KILNER.
COMBINED-CLASP AND BUTTON. No. 276,427. Patented Apr. 24, 1883.
N. PETERS. Phom-Lnna n ner, Washing'om D.c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE T. KILNER, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
COMBINED CLASP AND BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,427, dated April 24, 1883. Application filed November 29, 1862. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE T. KILNER, of the city and county of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buttons; and I declare the followingto be aspecification thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which is a side elevation of my invention.
My invention relates to a combined clasp and button composed of a curved spring-clasp provided with flaring ends leading to the converging portions or sections ofthe clasp, and having a post and shoe attached to one side, and is'specially useful for buttoning a wristband and fastening thereto a cuff, but may also be used in other portions-0t a garment for similar purposes.
A spring-clasp, A, is bent, as shown in the drawing, with a bow, a, in the center, and with flaring ends b. It may be covered with or wrought into an artistic design. A post, B, is attached to the under side of the clasp A in any suitable manner, and a shoe, 0, is soldered to said post. The shoe and post are inserted through the button-holes of the wristband in the usual manner, which brings the clasp along the exterior portion of said band. The two overlapping edges of the cuff are inserted within the flaring ends b of the clasp A, and are crowded down into and within said clasp, which, by means of its spring-pressure, se-
curely holds the cuff in position. The cuff may be easily removed from the clasp, when desired, by withdrawing it from the spring.
This combined clasp and button, with aslight modification of the form of the spring, but essentially the same in principle and operation, may be adapted to secure a collar to a. neckband, or hosiery to drawers, and may be used wherever else it may be desired to hold two garments together which are notsubjected to strain.
I am aware that a. necktie-fastener has been heretofore used consisting of a wire hook attached to or formed with a button; and also that a detachable clasp-hook for shirt-collars has been formed consisting of a single piece having a hook part, a middle clasp part, and a back part terminating in an eye or plate. These, however, have not been capable of exerting a clasping pressure, but were rather employed as hooks for connecting and supporting parts of garments.
I therefore claim as a novel and useful invention and desire to secure by Letters Pat en t-- A combined clasp and button, composed of the spring-clasp A, curved as shown, and provided with flaring ends b b, leading to converging sections of the clasp, and a post, B, and shoe 0, attached to one side of said clasp, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
GEORGE T. KILNER.
