N0.153,758. I I I Patented Aug.4 ,1874.
Y "Y, $1.064 par (tu I THE GRAPHIC goyuctrwmasl I PNK PLACEJLY- UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
FREDERICK C. DAYTON, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE NATIONAL NOVELTY COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN NECK-TIE RETAINERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,758; dated August 4, 1874; application filed June 13, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK C. DAYTON, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Neck-Tie Retainer; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawin gs and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and 1'epresent,'in-
Figure I, a rear view as attached to the neck-tie; Fig. 2, an end View, and in Fig. 3, a modification.
This invention relates to a device for securing the tie or how to the neck-band of the wearer, the object being to avoid the necessity of using the button of the band for the purpose, and at the same time afford a convenient means for securing studs, pins, or other jewelry to prevent loss; and the invention consists in a retainer formed from a single piece of wire bent at the center to form an eye or loop running to the right and left therefrom, turned up and returning to the center, where the two ends are bent down to form hooks to set over the top of the neckband.
I use any suitable wire possessing some degree of elasticity, and bend it to form the loop or eye A at the center. From this turn the wire to the right and left, as at B B, nearly horizontal and to the extent required for the length of the retainer, then turn back, as at C C, to near the center, then turn the two ends down and back, as atD D, Figs. 1 and 2. This completes the retainer. It is secured to the tie or bow by stitching around the parts C or otherwise, leaving the loop A free. The tie is attached by placing the hooks or ends D D over the collar or band at the center, then turning the extremes under correspondin g ends of the turned-down collar.
The loop A serves as a means for securing jewelry in the following manner: If for that class which are provided with an eye, the eye is passed through the loop A, as at a, and a pin, I), inserted through the eye across the loop, or a chain from the article may be made to the loop. Other loops may be added to the loop- A, as in Fig. 3, extending down to where it is desired to secure the article of jewelry.
I claim as my invention- The herein-described neck-tiereta-iner, made of a single piece of wire, bent to form the loops A and B C and hooks D D, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
- FRED. C. DAYTON.
