Description
UNITED STATE@ PATENT OFFICE.
S. A. BAILEY, OF NEW LONDON, CONNECTICUT.
WRINGING-MACHINE.
Specication of Letters Patent No. 27,609, dated March 2?. 1860.
To all rwhom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, S. A. BAILEY, of New London, Conn., have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VaShing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in combining two India rubber rollers with an oscillating guide board, substantially in the manner hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings Figure l represents a side elevation. Fig. 2 represents a vertical cross section.
In the figures A, represents a frame which is constructed of any suitable size or material.
a, a, represent two shafts which are placed across, and have their bearings in the frame A. These shafts are provided with two India rubber rollers B, B, which are passed over them, and they are also provided with cog-gearing near each end, the gearing upon one shaft working into the gearing upon the other as is represented in the drawings.
The rubber rollers are made of such size that when the shafts are turned or revolved, said rollers will roll together with their circumferences touching each other.
D, represents an oscillating guide board which is secured in the frame under the rollers. The object of this board is to direct the water which is pressed from the clothes into whichever tub it is desired to have it go.
In washing with this machine, I place a tub of water at E, and one at F, on each side of the machine. The clothes to be washed are then placed in warm soap suds, in the tub E, and allowed to remain for some twenty minutes. The guide board D, being placed in the posit-ion seen in Fig. l, I proceed to take the articles of clothing one by one from the tub, and placing one corner of the article between the rollers I turn said rollers by means of the handle, H, so that the article will pass between them and fall into tub F, in which there is also a supplyV of warm suds. I pass each article through in this manner and the rollers B, B, pressing the dirt and water from the clothes, it, the dirty water, falls upon board D and is conducted back into tub E. The clothes may then be passed from tub F, and the dirty water conveyed also into tub E. The clothes may then be run back into the clean water in tub F, and thus by passing from one tub to the other and pressing the clothes, they may be washed, and the dirty water be conducted away in any desired direction by means of the guide board D.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The combination of the rubber rollers B, B, with the oscillating guide board D, for the purpose of washing, and wringing the clothes and at the same time directing the course of the water pressed from the clothes into either tub substantially as set forth.
S. A. BAILEY.
