Description
PATENT OFFICE MARTIN WINGER, or voeANsvInijlE,Y PNNsYnvANIAQ r `MACHINE FoRsHAVvING BARE; 1
specification of Lettersratent No; 26,317, dated November 129,]5118519.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN WINGER, of Vogansville, in the county of Lancasterand State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful machine for the purpose of shaving off the rough crust or epidermis from` oak-bark, preparatory to the manufacture of` quercitron, used and exported vfor dyeing purposes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- 1 Figure 1, is a perspective view of the entire machine. Fig. 2: Nos. 1, 2 and 4; the
three concave sided cast iron rollers, de-1 tached, No. 3, the curved knives mounted on 'rollers aflixed to the axis which bears the strap pulleys D, C. T is the adjust-ing fra-me. Fig. 3 is an end View` of Fig. 6.
Fig. 4 shows the sliding frame G, the slides X, and grooved or slotted uprights F, fixed to the side frame Z of the machine, with the bearing pulley It, mounted in the vertical shaft H. Fig. 5, is one of the curved shaving knives V: Fig. 6, a side view of the `broad belt WV of leather to which the planoconvex cross pieces O, O, are attached forming an endless platform around the flanged outside drums Q with intermediate smalll carrying rollers, P, and a central flanged gulding roller P, as shown. Power, by means of a horse or steam is applied to the larger strap pulley D, the
shaft of which supports and revolves the shaving drum No. 3. There is also a smaller" strap pulley C, on this shaft, connected by a `strap to the larger pulley B. Behind this pulley B on its shaft is a small cogwheel (not seen but traced on the drawing) geared into a large co-gwheel on the shaft of the front flanged drum Q which gives motion to the endless revolving platform O, O, W.
The operation is thus: The bark of any size or thickness is laid with its concaved side upon the convex portion of the platform O,
which conveys it under the heavy pressing` roller l, so fixed in the uprights E, as to giveit play and accommodate itself to `they() 1 bark, however thick, This roller presses` the.. `bark of a regular curve on the` endless] plat` foi-m, which hasshortjretaining pegs in ea"` n .l piece, that enter the fiber? orginside"offftljelI bark. There is, between 1 this andthe con`` "ducting rollerV 2, `agbearing, pulleyflnas stated, supported on the" vertical shaftyHto prevent the possibility `ofthe bark from tur l ing upward as itpasseswthrough"underthe l pressing roller `1,1 to; the@ conducting "roller "No 2, which latter presents it tothe action l of a series of knives V, mounted as shown by` 1.11
1 No. 3, Fig. 2. 1 These mounted knivesyhave;l their axes supported" in the "frame T, inside: 1 V the external fraineIQslotted so as tolallowj",` the shaft or axis tdmove up and down. On` the top of the frame T, are two squareghead-" ed screws N, surinountedbytfcogged pulleys, .l M, geared into a cogged wheellL, on top lS, .1 l, of the upright I. `"Thescrewsfenter, fenialefo y screws in the top V, ofthe uprights K, and
thus by moving the `wheel L, the knives can be raised and lowered, to adapt themto; the n .i diverse thicknesses, in thefpieces of bark tol` `y@ l be operated on. The convex; platform*v 0,275.1 O, W, is adapted to the natural concavityzof 3 n i the bark, thereby 1 preventing its splitting n when pressed into a uniform` curve, to which 1 the knives are also adaptedaso thattliisf machine can `performtliegwork ofp`niany"8f01 hands when employedinthe ordinaryman-p` l., ,1 ner withdrawing knivesas is customary. 11 y, 1 Machines may `liavewbeen used, to`3pr`ess j bark fiat and shavefthem, and in somerespects perhaps similar inconstruction.` f C y I do not simply1 claim the pressing and^`1 l shaving by machinery nor thegearing ein-f` j, ployed separately considered.` 1i f y What Iclaim asmyinvention and `desire j y; to secure by Letters Patent isf-f l Jj@ 111 F9() `l The combination of the convex traveling bed O, W,`with thefrotary knives V,and`1 pressure rollers l, 2 4 and L` inthe uTanner1,` and for thepurpose setl forth.
