R. T. KING.
BRAKE SHOE.
No. 275,830. Patented Apr. 17,1883.
" 1.7V VEJVIO WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICEQ ROBERT THOMAS KING, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
BRAKE-SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,830, dated April 1'7, 1883,
Application filed February 21, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RoBER'r T. KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oolumbus, in the county of Franklin and State. of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Brake Head and Shoe, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates. to brake heads and shoes, and has for its object to provide a simple, durable, and efficient device in whiclrthe shoe can be readily and conveniently removed for substitution or any other purpose.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved brake head and shoe in relative position. Fig.2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view. Fig. at isa perspective detail view of the brake-shoe.
Referringto the drawings, A designates the brake head or block, which is provided with a groove or recess, B, in its back, by means of which it can be secured to the brake-bar. At the top of the head A is arranged a forwardlyprojecting horizontal flange, G, from which the top surface, D, of the head iscurved-downwardly and rearwardly, as shown, and the bottom of the said head is curved forwardly, as at E, so that it will extend out about as far as the top flange, O. This lower end, E, has its face F preferably flattened, and the said face is provided with a recess, G, the purpose of which will be presently described. At the sides of the top surface, D, of the head A are formed upwardly-extending flanges H H, having each an ear, I, on its inner side, at its top. The under edge, J, of these cars is curved upwardly and forwardly, and perforations L are provided through the said ears and flanges.
K is the brake-shoe, which comprises a main portion, M, preferably slightly curved, and a top extension, N, at aboutright angles to the main portion. This shoeis designed to be constructed in a single piece of wrought iron. The end of the extension N is curved downwardly, as at 0, so that the said extension will conform. to the shape of the top surface, D, of the brakehead. The shoe is of a width equal to the space between the top flanges H H, and the extensionN is inserted between the same, this insertion being admissible by reason of the curve of the under edge of the ears I I. When in this position the said ears I I serve to prevent vertical displacement, by accident, of the shoe, While the curve of the extension N obviates accidental forward displacement, and
the shoe cannot be removed as long as the brake hanger or lever I, that is fulcrumed on a transverse removable pin, Q, arranged in the perforations L L, is in position. To remove the shoe itis only necessary to remove the pin Q and lever or hanger P, when the shoe can be withdrawn from between the flanges H H. The flange 0 extends out far enough to allow the shoe to be entirely worn out before the flange of the wheel in connection with which the brake is employed would strike or wear against the brake-head.
It is a pin or projection on the end of the shoe, which serves to retain the latter from vertical strain or displacement at its lower end by entering the recess Gin the end of the head.
The operation and advantages of my invention are obvious. It is very simple and inexpensive in construction, and is very efficient and convenient in use.
I claim as my invention As an improvement in brakes, the combination of the head or block A, having the forwardly-projecting horizontal flange G, from which the top surface of the head is curved downwardly and rearwardly, and its bottom end, E, projecting forwardly about as far as the top flange U, and provided with the upwardly-projecting flanges H H at its top, each having an inwardly-projecting ear, I, the brake-shoe K, having the extension N, curved downwardly to correspond to the top of the head or block, and arranged to extend under the ears I I, and the hanger I, fulcrumed on the transverse removable pin Q, and arranged between the ears I I, so as to clamp the extension N to the top of the head-block, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixcd my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT THOMAS KING.
