Description

J. LEfiTZINGER. Brake-Block Holder.
No.199.72 6. Patented Jan. 29.1878.- I
N-PETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPNER. WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
JACOB LEUTZINGER, OF HILLSBOROUGH, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN BRAKE-BLOCK HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 199,726, dated January 29, 1878; application filed November 2, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JACOB LEiiTzINeER, of Hillsborough, in the county of J elferson and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Brake-Block Holder, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to provide an adjustable holder for brake-blocks, or that part of a wagon-brake by the immediate contact of which with the surface of the wheel the desired friction for braking or stopping the Wagon is produced.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved brake-block holder with its parts put together in position for use. Fig. 2 represents perspective views of the parts of the same separated.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the back plate of the holder. This is provided with a recess, a, for receiving the 'brake'bar of a lumber-wagon, being secured to the said bar by two bolts at b, as indicated in Fig. 1; or, instead of the recess, a lug, a, may be formed on the inside of the back plate,
' as shown in Fig. 2. The latter modification is for use on spring-wagons, the holder being secured on the arm or lever, where the'brakeblock is generally fastened, bysimply putting the holder together on the block, and running the bolt through the holes 0 and the lug a all at once, and thus, by a nut on. the bolt, clamping the back and side plates to the block and the brake-arm at the same time.
B B are the side plates of the holder. These are roughened or provided with projections 01 on the inside, to give a firmer hold on the block, and insure it against slipping. 9n the rear edges of the side plates B are flanges e, at right angles to their surfaces.
When the back plate A has been placed on the block, and the side plates B adjusted to grasp the block and back plate in the position of Fig. 1, the back plate A is held between the block and the flanges c of the side plates B, which latter are clamped together with the brake-block by two bolts, D, being inserted through one side plate and behind the brakeblock, and screwed into a threaded hole in the other side plate.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with back plate A, constructed for attachment to a wagon-lever or brakebar, of the two side plates B B, provided with flanges at right angles thereto, and adapted to be held by one or more bolts detachably t0 the back plate and brake-bars, as shown and described.
