Description
June 5, 1956 T. BRADY LABEL HOLDER FOR FILING CABINET DRAWERS Filed Jan. 19, 1954 INVENTOR THOMAS BRA DY ATTORNEY United States Patent C LABEL HOLDER FOR FILING CABINET DRAWERS Thomas Brady, Speedway City, Inc].
Application January 19, 1954, Serial No. 404,907
2 Claims. (Cl. 40-8) This invention relates to improvements in label holders for filing cabinet drawers.
An object of the invention is to provide a device which holds a label of a filing cabinet drawer in such a position on the front of the drawer that a person standing in front of the filing cabinet may easily read the label without having to stoop o-r squat.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device which holds a label of a filing cabinet drawer smoothly in a position upon the front of the drawer and protects it from soiling and displacement.
Another object of the invention is to provide a label holder for filing cabinet drawers in which a label may be easily inserted and from which it may be easily withdrawn.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the course of the following description considered in conjunction with the attached drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of the preferred form of the holder of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a view taken along the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view taken along the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the holder element of the present invention.
Figure 5 is an elevational view of an alternative form of the invention.
Figure 6 is a view taken along the line 6-6 of Figure 5.
Figure 7 is a view taken along the line 77 of Figure 6.
Referring now to the drawing in more detail, numeral 1 designates generally a filing cabinet. Numeral 2 designates a drawer of the filing cabinet 1 having a front panel 3. A frame, generally designated 4, is positioned exteriorly of the front panel 3 and is fixedly secured thereto. In the form of the invention shown in Figures 1 to 3 inclusive, the frame 4 is constructed integrally with the front panel 3 of the filing cabinet drawer 2. In the alternative form of the invention shown in Figures 5 to 7 inclusive, the frame 4 is constructed separate from the front panel 3 and is positioned so as to project outwardly through an aperture 5 in the front 3, being secured to the front panel 3 by a flange 6 which is spot-welded or otherwise fixedly secured to the inner surface of the margin of the front panel 3 surrounding the aperture 5. The frame 4 has a declining viewing surface 7 provided with a window 8.
Positioned within and secured to the frame 4 is a label holder 9 having a declining panel 10 paralleling and spaced from the viewing surface 7. The label holder consists of a bent plate of resilient material, the upturned portion of which constitutes a panel 10 and the other portion of which 11 rests upon the lower portion of the frame 4 and is fixedly secured thereto by spot welding or other suitable means. A label-engaging tab 12 extends upwardly from each side of the panel 10 and another labelengaging tab 13 extends upwardly adjacent the lower end of the panel 10 intermediate its sides, as shown in Figure 4. The tabs 12 and 13 cooperate in holding a label 14 upon the face of the sloping panel 10 in a position in which the label 14 is in registry with the window 8. The
Patented June 5, 1956 "ice label 14 is inserted in the holder from the interior of the drawer 2 through a aperture 16 customarily provided in the inner panel of the front of a file drawer. The panel 10 of the holder 9 has a slight downward curve on its upper end portion and has its central upper portion cut away, as shown at 15, to facilitate the insertion and withdrawal of the label 14. A sheet of transparent material 17 is positioned within the frame 4 so as to close the window 8 and is secured to the inner face of the margin of the viewing surface 7 surrounding the window 8 by means of an adhesive or sealing material, which not only holds the transparent sheet in place but excludes the entrance of dust into the holder from outside of the drawer. The ends of the lugs 12 bear against the adjacent portions of the inner face of the sheet 17, as shown in Figures 3 and 7, by reason of the resiliency of the holder 9, helping to hold the sheet in place.
As will be seen from the foregoing discussion, a label may be readily inserted in or withdrawn from the holder. The drawer 3 is held in the open position and the label 14 is inserted or withdrawn from between the panel 10 and the sheet 17 from the interior of the drawer. The curvature of the upper ends of the panel 1%) guides the edge of the label into place between the panel 10 and the plate 17 and the cutaway portion 15 makes it possible to hold the label between the thumb and forefinger until it is properly positioned upon the panel 10 with its sides embraced by the tabs 12 and its bottom edge supported by the tab 13. In such position the label will be in registry with the window 8 and may be read through the transparent sheet 17. It will thus be held firmly in place and protected from dust and from becoming soiled by contact with the hands of persons using the files. The angle at which the label is held enables a person standing in front of the file cabinet to read the label, even on the bottom drawer of the cabinet, without stooping or squatting and the device presents a smooth, uniform and at tractive appearance.
What is claimed is:
1. In combination with a drawer having a front panel provided with an opening having upper and lower edges, a frame comprising an upper declining panel having an upper edge portion supportably engaging the upper edge of said opening, said frame having a horizontal lower panel having a rear edge portion supportably engaged with the lower edge of said opening, said declining upper frame panel having a viewing opening, a label holder positioned within said frame and between said upper and lower panels of the frame, said label holder comprising an upper declining panel extending along and spaced parallel beneath the upper frame panel, said upper holder panel having side edge portions secured to the upper frame panel, said holder further comprising a horizontal lower panel bearing upon the lower frame panel, said holder upper panel having upper and lower ends, and a label engaging tab on end projecting upwardly from said holder panel near the lower end of the holder upper panel.
2. In combination with a drawer having a front panel provided with an opening having upper and lower edges, a frame comprising an upper declining panel having an upper edge portion supportably engaging the upper edge of said opening, said frame having a horizontal lower panel having a rear edge portion supportably engaged with the lower edge of said opening, said declining upper frame panel having a viewing opening, a label holder positioned within said frame and between said upper and lower panels of the frame, said label holder comprising an upper declining panel extending along and spaced parallel beneath the upper frame panel, said upper holder panel having side edge portions secured to the upper frame panel, said holder further comprising a horizontal panel, said frame upper panel having side edges and said 5 holder upper panel having side edges spaced from the side edges of the frame upper panel, and additional label holding tabs projecting upwardly from the side edges of the holder upper panel.
