This invention has reference to improvements in detachable marking plates for use in connection with file cabinet drawers, storage bins, drawer compartment partitions, and in similar locations wherein it is desired to display identifying information referring to the content of the depository served by the marking plates.

The invention has for its principal object to provide a durable and neat appearing marking plate which is furnished with a marking surface uponwhich may be erasably marked such data as may be desired,'and which is further provided with a novel construction and arrangement of attaching clip whereby the device may be frictionally engaged with a partition board, shelf, or simi lar part of a receptacle which it is desired to equip with informative marking.

Other objects of this invention, not at this time more particularly enumerated, will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the same.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective View of a tier of storage or file drawers, the partitions of which are equipped with the novel marking devices of this invention as shown; Figure 2 is a face view showing one peripheral shape of the novel marker of this invention, and Figure 3 is a face View showing another peripheral shape of the same; Figure 4 is a front face View with underlying parts progressively broken away to show the internal inter-relation of the same in making up the structure of the novel marker device; Figure 5 is a transverse section, taken on line 5-5 in Figure 4; and Figure 6 is a perspective View of an attaching clip (removed) with which the device is furnished.

Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the hereinabove described views, to indicate corresponding parts.

Referring now to said drawings, the reference character 1 indicates a body plate provided with an upwardly turned peripheral flange 2, to thus provide a main body or base having a shallow dish-like interior. Said body plate 1 is stamped or otherwise formed ASSIGNOR- TO HAMPDEN MANUFAC- out of sheet metal or other tough rigid material. Said body plate is provided with a pair of transverse slots 3 in suitably spaced apart parallel relation.

Associated with said body plate 1 isan attaching clip comprising a connecting plate t having integrally formed therewith and springing from the respective rear and front edges of the same depending gripping tongues, viz the rear gripping tongue 5 and the front gripping tongue 6. Said rear gripping tongue 5 is disposed in forwardly inclined angular relation to the plane of said connecting plate. The front grippingtongue 6 is disposed to converge toward the rear gripping tongue 5, but is of less length than the latter. Said connecting plate is of a width from its rear edge to its front edge corresponding to the spacing of said slots 3 of said body plate 1. In assembling the at taching clip with said body plate 1, the respective rear and front gripping tongues are inserted downwardly through the respective slots 3 of the body plate 1, so that said connecting plate 4 seats itself within the dishlike interior of said body plate 1 withits gripping tongues 5 and 6 depending from the under or bottom side of the latter.

Inserted within the dish-like interior of said body-plate 1 over said connecting plate 4 is an inlay plate 6 made of sheet metal or other suitable rigid material. The depth of the shallow dish-like interior of the body plate 1 is so predetermined as to accommodate the connecting plate t and inlayplate- 6 in such manner that when the latter parts are assembled the top' surface of said inlay plate will be substantially flush with the upturned pe ripheral flange 2, and said inlay plate serves to hold said connecting plate immovably seated upon the body plate.

The reference character 8 indicates abacking plate, which corresponds in peripheral outline and size to the peripheral outline and size of the flanged body-plate 1, so that the same may be superimposed upon the'latter and over, said inlay-plate 7, withthe marginal portions of the backing plate registered with and resting upon and against the free top portions of the flanges 2. Said backing plate v 8 may be made of sheet metal or other suitable substantially rigid material.

Supported upon the outer face or surface of said backing plate is a tablet sheet 9 of an inscribable material upon which may be written or marked b the user desired data.

I prefer to employ for said tablet sheet 9 a other parts assembled together in the manner above indicated, a marginal binding element 10 made of metal or other suitable material is applied in enclosing relation over, around and upon the marginal portions of-the body plate and parts assembled therewith, to both firmly and securely unite the said parts in operative assembled relation and at the same-time provide a neat and attractive finish to the marker device,.and so thatall raw edges of metal or other material are enclosed and concealed. The marginal binding 10 leaves exposed substantially the entire area of the tablet sheet 9 so that a suitable space for the reception of desired markings is furnished.

In general, the character of the body portions or elements are similar in construction to that-shown in my prior United States Letters Patent No. 1,604,120, but the attaching means in combination therewith according to the instant invention provides a novel means for mounting the marker on a drawer compartment partition, bin wall, or other similar place. When so mounting the device, the rear gripping tongue will lie flat against the back of the partition or wall, and owing to the angular relation of said rear gripping tongue 5 to the plane of the body of the marker, the latter will be tilted to assume a downwardly sloping position, whereby the markings thereon are most conveniently displayed for quick and easy reading (all as shown in Figure 1). The front gripping tongue 6 being disposed in converging angular relation to said rear gripping tongue 5, and being of less length, will function so that its lower freeedge will frictionally engage the front face of the partition or wall, and by the inherent tension of the tongue body tend to firmly grip the partition or wall when the latter is thus operatively engaged between the rear and front tongues, all whereby the device is securely held and yet is readily detachable from the partition or wall at will.

It will be obvious that the marker device of this invention may be made in various sizes to suit conditions of use, and also that the gripping tongues may be suitably dimensioned and spaced apart in a desired manner.

Having thus described my present invention, I claim A detachable marker device, comprising a body member having a peripheral upstanding flange and provided in its bottom with trans verse spaced apart slots, an attaching clip comprising a connecting plate having integrally formed therewith depending gripping tongues of substantial width springing respectively from the rear and front edges .thereof, said gripping tongues extending downwardly through said slots with said connecting plate engaged on the bottom of said body member, the forward tongue being shorter than the rearward tongue and the latter converging toward the former, an inlay plate fitted within the peripheral flange of said body member and engaged over said connecting plate, to retain the same against upward displacement, a backing plate overlying said inlay plate and registered upon the edges of said peripheral flange, an inscribable tablet sheet supported by said backing plate, and a continuous metallic binding member enveloping the registered peripheries of said flanged body member, backing plate and tablet sheet to retain the elements of the device in assembled relation.
