Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
B. E. ORTON, OF LYNDON, ILLINOIS.
MODE 0F APPLYING HORSE-POWER TO MILLS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 27,468, dated March 13, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, B. E. ORroN, of Lyndon, in the county of Whiteside and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Combination of a Horse-Power and Grinding Mill; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a plan or top view of my invention. Fig. 2, a side sectional view of ditto.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two gures.
The object of this invention is to combine a horse power and grinding mill in such a way that a very compact mechanism will be obtained, and one that will admit of the mill being detached and other machinery lonnected when required, so as to be driven The invention is designed chiefly for the use of farmers and others whorequire horse powers of a portable character and simple in construction, and with which a grinding mill is the essential feature, or the most important device to be driven.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it..
. A., represents a bed or platform on which a box B is placed transversely and C is a quadrilateral frame placed on said box'and permanently secured thereto in any proper way.
At the center of the frame C, there is placed a grinding mill D, which has an external rotary shell, and may be of the kind known as Grangers mill, or any other of similar arrangement may be used. The shell of the mill D, has a gear a, at its outer side into which pinions b, b, gear, said pinions being on vertical shafts c, at opposite sides of the mill, and the lower ends of the shafts stepped in the bottom of the frame C, the upper ends being tted in curved bars E, one for each shaft, the lower ends of said bars being bolted to the bottom of frame C, as shown at a. The pinions b, o, gear into corresponding pinions (l, d, one of the shafts c, of which is stepped at its lower end in the bottom of frame C as shown at a. The curved bars E, F, at each side of the mill D,
are connected by a hinge or joint f, as shown clearly in Fig. l.
Gr is a toothed rim which is fitted on friction rollers g, in the frame C, and between rollers L, at the sides of the frame. This rim is toothed at its inner side and it gears into the pinions cl, d, as shown in both gures.
To the toothed rim G, sweeps H, H, are attached, and on the shaft e', of one of the pinions d, a bevel wheel I, is secured, said wheel being below the frame C, and gearing into a bevel pinion J, on the inner end of a horizontal shaft K, which extends beyond the end of the bed or platform A and has a pulley L, placed on it. The inner bearing c', of the shaft K, is attached to the under side of the frame C, in such a way that it may be readily detached or shifted when necessary, so as to throw the pinion J, out of gear with the wheel I.
The operation is as follows: the draft animals are attached to the sweeps H, and if it is desired to drive the mill D alone the shaft K, is disconnected from the driving parts by removing or adjusting the bearing z', so that the bevel pinion J, will be thrown out of gear with the bevel wheel I. The toothed rim G as it rotates, communicates a rotary motion to the mill D, through the medium of the gearing a, b, I), cl, d, the mill being in a position concentric with the toothed rim Gr. In case other machinery is to be driven besides the mill, the bevel pinion J is allowed to remain in gear with the wheel I, power being taken from pulley L.
If the mill D is not required to be driven, the bars E are loosened from the bottom of frame C, the pinions o, b, removed and the bars E, turned over on the bars F.
From the above description it will be seen that a very compact device is obtained, and one simple in construction. There are numerous horse powers termed portable which may be used for driving various machines, but as they are separate and distinct devices, they occupy much more room than the within described invention. By combining the grinding mill D with the horse power as shown, the mill, which is mostly used, oc cupieslno room that could be appropriated for any other purpose, and still the driving mechanism, when the mill is not required to be driven, or even when it is required to be driven, may be used for driving other inab, b, mill D, and the bevel gearing I, J, chilies. with shaft K arranged substantially as, and
Having thus described my invention, what for the purpose herein set forth. I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let- B. E. ORTON. 5 ters Patent, is- Witnesses:
The combination of the toothed rim G, I. LLOYD, stationary pinions el, d, adjustable pinions M. C. ORTON.
