Description

unirsi) sra'rns PATENT clarion.
GE-LSTON SANFORD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HORSE-POWER.
Specication of Letters Patent No. 31,090, dated January `8, 1861.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, GELsToN SANFORD, of
the city, county, and State of New York, I
have invented a new and Improved Horse- Power'; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters o f reference marked thereon, in which- .Figure 1 is an elevation, Fig. 2 a plan view, Fig. 3 a vertical cut. section, Fig. 4 is an elevation showing the bevel wheels and pulley shaft below the line of draft, Fig. 5 a plan view showing bevel wheels and shaft also below the line of draft, Fig. G, a vertical cut section with bevel wheels and shaft below the draft line and bed or lower frame.
The object .of my invention is to make a horse power that will be equal to any other, while it occupies much less ground room by elevating the driving pulleys suiiiciently high to be out of the way of the operator as shown in Fig. 1.
The frame L with rim J is so constructed that by unscrewing the bolts by which it is held to the bed, the frame L can be turned around, so that the belt-pulley can be turned to run a shaft set at different relations to the main bed of the'driving machinery. If a planter or farmer wishes to drive more than Aone shaft, for operating different machinery,
set at different relations to the bed frame, by these devices I can apply my belt to any machinery simply by revolving the frame L, thus bringing the belt-pulley in such a position as to apply the driving belt to machinery at any point wished, without the eX- pense of moving thel whole of the machinery.
In cases of aowers not revolvinO` like mine C, and keeping it in place with three or more manner that they can be set for driving the shaftl I to operate machinery set at any angle to the machine; 3d by placing the beveled wheels G and H below lower frame or bed of the machine for the purpose of constructing a stationary power into a portable one.
A is the bed or lower frame which can be fastened to the floor of any building or to the ground.
B' is the internal gear wheel which rests upon rollers C. The wheel is kept in its place with wheels D whichhave fiXed centers. The wheel B also has receptacles on its upper-side for securing shafts for the purpose of attaching horses or other power to operate the machine.
E is the vertical shaft to which is secured cog wheel F which gears into wheels D thereby causing shaft E to revolve which operates bevel gear wheel Gr which gears into bevel gear H which is attached to and operates shaft I to which is attached driving pulleys.
J is a. ring fastened to spiderK by screws, and can be set to revolve the vertical frame L to any position to the lower or bed frame A. Frame L can be fastened by the hole in the cross-head and allowed to be turned in any direction without affecting its rigidity.
IVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 'Ihe manner of arranging the frame L, rim J, and spider II, with-the bed frame A of the machine, for the purpose of revolving the frame L and belt-pulley, so that the power can be applied to a shaft or shafts standing in different relations to the driving machine, as set forth, and described.
