SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 263,378, dated August 29, 18852-,

1o all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OorAvIUs A. WRIGHT, of Chicago, in the county of Cook'and State ot' Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvementin Wall-PaperExhibitors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention has for its object to produce an apparatus in which to exhibit an assortment of wall-paper and border in such relative position to each other that the purchaser can make his selections with expedience; and it consists ot' the arrangement of a series of rollers, over which pieces of the several designs ot' wall-paper, connected together by pasting so as to form a continuous sheet, are stretched and wound vertically,and, in combi'- nation therewith, of another series ot' rollers rectangularly placed to the other rollers, for guiding and winding` horizontally over the upper edge of such wall-paper different designs ot' border, that are similarly connected and made continuous, in a manner to enable the exhibitingot` either wallpaper with either border, all as hereinafter described and specifically claimed.

Corresponding letters in the several iigures of the drawings designate like parts.

A denotes the main frame of the apparatus, which is composed each side of two timbers framed parallel with each other and connected together by suitable braces, and B the propframe that is hinged to the main frame.

To the rear timbers of the main frame are pivoted horizontally in suitable boxes two rollers, C and D, each having a crank to the end of one of its gudgeons by which to rotate it, and over these rollers C and Dare pivoted in verticali y-slidin g boxes rollersE and F. Upon the rollers C or D the wall-paper is alternately wound or unwound, and the rollers E and F will act as tension-rollers for causing such paper to wind close upon such rollers C or D, and not to unwind of its own accord.

G and H are rollers pivoted in suitable bearings that are secured to the front timbers ot' frame A. These rollers G and H will guide the wall-paper intermediate of rollers C and D, soV as to hold it stretched between the front timbers of such frame A.

Between the upper braces, a and b, of frame A are pivoted two rollers, I and J, each provided with a crank. Upon these rollers I or J is wound the border. This border is coinposed of pieces of the several patterns in the same manner as the wall-paper, and is passed through behind guide-strips c and over guiderollers d in front ot' frameA,and in a position that such border will overlap and will be in close proximity with the upper edge ot' the wall-paper that is stretched over the guiderollersG and H. By this arrangement, as will be readily understood, any sectional pattern of the border can be moved overany consecutive design'of wall-paper, and vice versa, and

it is thereby comparatively easy for the purchaser to make a selection Athat will suit his taste, and will therefore be convenient to such purchaser and time-saving to the dealer.

The apparatus can be made up in man y fancy and ornamental styles, and so as to have an artiticial and elaborate appearance, and the mechanical portions of the apparatus can be closed in; and the front may be provided with a glass door or cover, or with a screen for excluding dust and iiies, for the purpose of keeping the paper clean.

1. An apparatus for exhibiting wall-paper, having horizontal rollers for winding and guiding such wall-paper in a vertical direction and vertical rollers for winding and guiding'the border transversely of the wall-paper and in close contact therewith, in order that such wallpaper and border may be exhibited in the position they would assume when in use, substantially as set forth.

2. An apparatus for exhibiting wall-paper, having rollers C, D, G, and H for winding and guiding such wall-paper and rollers I, J, and d for winding and guiding the border in a direction transverse to the line ot' travel of the wall-paper and in close contact therewith, the whole being constructed and arranged to operate substantially in the manner set forth.
