1 Claim.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in canning implements, and the principal object of the invention is to provide an implement of the character herein described, which may be conveniently and effectively employed for simultaneously holding a. jar and sustaining a funnel in position on the jar by the use of only one hand, sothat the other hand is available for other work and any possibility of the hands being burned or otherwise injured is prevented.

Some of the advantages of the invention reside in its extreme simplicity of construction, in its efi'icient and convenient operation, and in its adaptability to economical manufacture.

With the above more important objects and features in view and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings. in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the invention, partially broken away, and illustrating the same applied to a jar and funnel;

Figure 2 is a side elevational view, similar to that shown in Figure 1, but with the funnel and its supporting frame removed;

Figure 3 is a top plan view of the invention per se, also with the funnel and supporting frame removed;

Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 44 in Figure 2;

Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 5-5 in Figure l, and

Figure 6 is a perspective view of the funnel supporting frame used in the invention.

Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.

Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of a canning implement which is designated generally by the reference character It) and embodies in its construction a pair of juxtaposed handle members l2, I4, provided at their free end portions with a pair of coacting hand grips l6, While the other end portions of the handle members l2, M are arcuated to afford a pair of coacting jaws I8, 20, having overlapped ears 22 which are pivotally connected together by a rivet-shaped portion 24 of a fulcrum element 26.

The element 26 is vertically disposed and is provided in its upper end portion with a cylindrical socket 28 to removably receive a downturned supporting stem 30 which is formed integrally with an annular frame 32.

The frame 32 supports a funnel 34 which is provided at its upper edge with an outturned flange or rim 36 to rest upon the frame, while a plurality of detents 38 are srtuck outwardly from the portion of the funnel immediately below the frame 32 to sustain the funnel and the frame together.

The funnel 34 has a depending neck portion 40, so that when the stem 30 is inserted in the socket 28 and the jaws I8, 20 are fricti-onally engaged with a jar 42, the neck portion 40 of the funnel 34 will extend into the jar as shown in Figure 1. Needless to say, the funnel may be readily removed by simply withdrawing the stem 30 from the socket 28.

Finally, it is to be noted that a keeper member 44 is pivot-ally mounted upon the handle member l4 between a pair of collars 4B, the keeper member 44 having a hook-shaped portion 48 which is adapted to engage the handle member I 2 when the hand grips 16 are brought together, whereby the jaws l8, 2!] may be sustained in a gripping engagement with the jar 42, when so desired.

It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly understood from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.

While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

Having described the claimed as new is:

In a canning implement, the combination of a pair of coacting jaws, a pair of handles provided at one end of the respective jaws, a pair of superposed ears provided at the other end of the respective jaws and having coaxial apertures, a vertically elongated member including a rivetshaped lower portion extending through said apertures and pivotally connecting said jaws for movement toward and away from each other, the upper portion of said member being provided with a vertical bore having an open upper end and a closed lower end and constituting a socket, an annular frame disposed in a horizontal plane above said jaws, a supporting stem extending downwardly from said frame and having its lower portion removably and rotatably disposed in said socket, and a funnel carried by said frame.
